Capers Tie, But Suffer E.T. Blues"
By Jacob Schaad Jr. ERMA - Suffering from . the E.T.' Blues. Lower Cape May Regional had to settle for a 12-12 game with St. Joseph's of Hammonton Saturday. In football parlance. E.T,. stands for enemy territory and the Capers spent enough time there to claim permanent possession, but unfortunately for thehi they couldn’t deliver the knockout punch that would have insured the win. The team also had problems with its place kicking game. Eric Fenwick, who a week ago was nothing short of sensational as he booted a record setting 47 yard field goal and two extra points, missed two field goal attempts and two extra point tries’. However, in fairness to him. two of the attempts came on less than prdcision-like snaps and one of the FG attempts was n 42 yarder. TYPICAL OF THE team’s frustration last Saturday was what looked

like another patent late game drive for victory. Gaining possession on a punt on their owh 34 yapd line with less than three minutes on the clock, the Capers moved quickly in five play's to St. Joseph’s 11 yard line. Sean Brennan went astray and the Wildcats recovered. More frustration. The Capers regained possession on a punt with 24 seconds left, moved the ball to the 27 yard line with six seconds remaining and called upon Fenwick to win the game in typical Cape May fashion. It was not to be. however, as his 42 yard long shot try fell short. The Capers tallied first early in the second quarter after a frustrating scoreless - first period in which they held the ball for 20 plays as opposed to the Wildcats’ seven. They moved as far as the enemy’s one yard line, then were penalized five yards for being'offsides and lost four more yards on two quarterback sacks. However, Cape May managed to extricate itself from this setback when Brennan, substituting for Bob Chadwick (sprained ankle), threw a flare out pass to Fenwick who romped into the end zone. They were not so fortunate later in that quarter ,in which they again dominated play in enemy territory (23-13 possessions in favor of Cape May). After Will Mendo recovered a fumble on the Capers’ 16, Lower Cape May moved in 17 plays to St. Joseph’s three yard line, the key plays being,an 11 yard run by Brennan and a 13 yarder to the three by 1,000 yard career rusher David Craig. But again a penalty for a false start set the Tigers back to'their eight. Brennan then went to the air route and connected with
Bob Bonner in the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown. But the officials called a holding penalty and the ball was mov6d back to the 25. Three plays later Fenwick unsuccessfully tried a 32 yard field goal. It figured that with all of these lost opportunities, a team as talented as St. Joseph’s would take advantage and it did early in the second half when John Straub romped 70 yards for a TD on a reverse. The extra point kick failed. The next time the Wildcats gained possession they moved 45 yards in eight plays to go ahead 12-6 on a one yard quarterback sneak by pat Lancetta. The Cardiac Kids came roaring back, Dave Craig . leaping over the defenders to score from the one yard line. It culminated a 70 yard, 13 play drive in which Brennan carried for 18 yards on a broken pass play. When the ball was fumbled on the snap, the kick failed. That ended the scoring although Lower Cape May had two more big opportunities in enemy territory in the remaining 4:07 minutes. The Capers love E.T.. but they just couldn’t show their affection enough on Saturday. SL Joseph’s (3-1-1) 0 0 6 6 12 I^iwer Cape May (3-1-1) 0 6 0 6 12 Scoring: Fenwick (Pass-10 from Brennan), kick failed; Straub (Run-701, kick failed; Lancetta (Kun-I), kick failed; Craig <Run-1), kick failed.
