by Martha’Conlin. Cross country, meanwhile, also has been having an outstanding season at Wildwood Catholic. Coached by John Malinowski, the tt-3 Crusaders recently finished first in the Cape May County nieet. Mafk Malinowski led the field with a 19:11 time and Paul Koch was second with a 19:17 mark. They ran on a difficui 3.1 mile course through the dunes on the North Wildwdjd heath between Fifth and 16th Avenues. Wildwood Catholic s soccer team is still in the building process as it is only in its third year of varsity play. Now at 2-6. the Crusaders' season so far has been marked by a big upset victory over a very good Gloucester Catholic team , ATHLETES ARE sometimes taken to task for.phying too much attention to play books instead of text books. Not so in the case of Stone Harbor's Tom Hutchinson, a senior at Middle Township High School. Hutchinson and three other South Jersey athletes were awarded trophies by the Brooks-Irvine Football Club at a Camden luncheon for not only their athletic ability but for their scholas|ic achievements also.' Hutchinson is a center on the Panthers' football team and is a member of the track and field squad. Academically, he is an “A” student, ranking fifth in a class of 230 students and is a member of the National Honor Society. He also is president of the senior class. Coach Phil Exley, currently piloting his team to another successful season, said this is the first time any member of the Middle Township football team has received this . outstanding award. HOtchinson’s mother is secretary to the local school board and his father is vice-president of the First-South Jersey bank. / Congratulations to a fine athlete and an excellent student who has put it all together! ON THE COLLEGE LEVEL, meanwhile, another Cape May County athlete has the coaching staff ecstatic up at 1 Rutgers in New Brunswick. Joe Di Gilio, who was outstanding at Lower Cape May Regiofial High School, has started as center at every game this year for the Scarlet Knights. The 6-1. 240 pound sophmqfe last year, understudies Frank Naylor, who was drdfred by the Seattle Tieahawks.'and earned this year's taif^ng berth after a

strong pre-season showing. Coaches describe him as an excellent tfocker, particularly in pass protection. Di Gilio has one of the most thrilling experiences of his young collegiate career ahead of him. On Thursday night, November 11, the 4-3 Scarlet Knights will play at Giant Stadium against West Virginia, one of the nation's top ranked collegiate' teams. *.»• RUNNING CONTINUES td be a popular participant sport and in Ocean City they were at it again on Saturday with the 13.i mile Fenton Carey Half-Marathon. Breaking Course records in their respective divisions were winner Ray Cerankowski and Mary Gormley and runners-up Bill Godschall and Jane Diamond. Cerankowski (1:05:35) and Gpdschall.l 1:07:59) shattered the old record of v one hour, eight minutes and 36 seconds set in 1980 by Jack Kruse. Gormley's 1:25:56 and Diamond’s 1:26:01 broke the woman's mark of 1:26! 12 establishes by Chris Schilling in 1929. The team championship was won by the Runaway Athletic Club of Ocean City with the Boardwalk Runners of Atlantic City finishing second. In the ‘Its Never Too Late Department," 62-year-old Michael Bertolini ran a time of 1.24:28 which race officials are checking to sec if it a new U S A. mark.
