As ThanksRiving gets closer, there’s reunions with family and friends to look forward to. Get togethers are planned, and down come the curtains and up go the winter drapes. Friday is known as Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes was , one of a group of conspirators who dug a tunnel under the British House of Lords with the idea of blowing it up while it was in session. He was caught on this night in 1605 and executed a few days later. The whole affair is known in British history as the "Gunpowder Plot." British schoolboys still celebrate the night by building bonfires

and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes.

It is about this time of the year that we get a stretch of warm dry weather with little wind and usually a bit of haze in the air. In this country, we call it "Indian Summer." In England, France and Italy they call it "St. Martin's Summer.” Well, while the year's clock is slowly and inexorably running down, there's plenty to do in the eleventh month. This is a good time to make sure the windows are tight against the arrows of sleet and rain that are sure to come.
