0,VE OVER GOLD (Warner Brothers) it/ another incredibly strong outing from England’s Dire Straits. This band is fortunate to have Mark KnopflCr’s Dylanesque voice and his' melodic gUitar work, as he keeps things moving. The songwriting is consistent and infectious, making each track successful. Dire Straits have another Smash. The legendary blueslabel from Chicago, Chess Records, is back in business and we should all be thankful for that. They were responsible for some of thefincst music ever put on vinyl, and it’s great to learn that much of it will be reissued. One essential purchase is The Great Twenty-Eight (Chess) by Chuck Berry. Who could ask for more than twenty-eighi Htts from one of the foundflg fathers of rock. These vinLige cuts are pure rock anmroll with Berry's bluesy vocals and stinging guitar breaks sounding as enthralling as when they were' first issued. This is a great way to kick off their reissue program. ON THE SUBJECT of the blues, H.H..King's 16 Original Rig Hits (Fantasy) is a near perfect collection of the famous bluesman’s hits. Every guitar solo screams with passion, and Kings' smooth, always in control vocals seem to cry out with pain. My only complaint is this should have been a two-record set. THE FLIRTS are a new all-girl group * and theik debut, toe a Dance (Vanguard) is a fun release. Nothing exceptional, but the upbeat melodies — not unlike The Go Go’s — fit their voices well and the modem, electronic backing will win over dancers. The Flirts should be able to find some radio play with this album, as several songs are catchy' enough to work as singles. CEDAR WALTON is a highly respected jazz pianist, who has led or been the focal point of some of the most important jazz gToups performing. Piano Solos (Clean Cuts, P.O. Box 16264, Baltimore, Maryland 21210) captures ian alone with his instruhWnt, and it’s a true .gem. Cedar Walton's solo work Ui beautiful. His playing is/warm, sensitive, and very melodic. Piano Solos should appeal to morcithan just the jazz buff.
