Car Seat
OOURT HOUSE - With a law pending in The State of New Jersey to require that all children under 40 pounds ride in child restraints^ the Ocean City Police Department has donated two restraining seats'to Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital for demonstration purposes. Officer Jim Plousis, head of the traffic enforcement and accident investigation unit, presented the two car seats to the hospital, one ' for infants and one for toddlers. THE SEATS WERE donated by the manufacturers for the police to use in demonstrations and were used on a float in several baby parades and in the Miss America pagent parade. He will present films, literature -and lectures to the nurses at the hospital so that they may advise mothers of the advisability of child resUamts and which ones ai^ # federally ^approved. *£ THE NUMBER ONE cause of death for children over the age of \ year is motor vehicle accidents. Nearly 1.500 children under 5 die every year, and nearly 60,000 are injured in auto accidents in this country. Most child deaths and injuries are ‘preventable. Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. children ride in child restraints, yet experts say that ’more than 80 percent of fatalities could be avoided by using effective child restraint systems. IN A 20 MPH crash a 15-pound baby is thrown forward with the force of a 300-pound weight. The impact is the same as for^a three-story fall onto a concrete sidewalk. A child held in an adult's lap is not safe from injury. In many accidents the adult crushes the child when he or she is thrown forward on top of the.youngster. Babies and young children should ride in federally approved child restrainst. Even buckling children into adult safety belts is not good enough. join the great

because the safety belt focuses the collision force on the pelvis and lower torso and children whose pelvic bones arc not sturdy may suffer abdominal and "lumbar injuries hi a collision. AN UNRESTRAINED child is a hazard to everyone else in the car; the unrestrained passenger
turns into a flying missile •in a crash. Hospital Administrator, William H. Waldron III stated, ‘it is a great opportunity for the hospital to provide added information to new mothers and others on effective ways to avoid tragedies such as child death and injury due to auto accidents”.
