is ineffective. Glucose is derived from carbohydrates in the digestive process and is conwrtcd into energy. In diabetes, the glucose col lects in the bloodstream, is eventually eliminated through the urine and the body fiterally^ starves to death unless corrective measures are taken. SYMPTOMS OF diabetes include unusual thirst or hunger, rapid weight loss, frequent urination, blurred vision, drowsiness, irritability, intense itching or cramps and slow healing of cuts. The disease is more prevalent among, women, the obese, people over 40 and those with diabetes in

the family.

There are two types of diabetes: Type one, or insulin-dependent (juvenile) and Type two. or non-insulin-dependent (adult-onset). The insulindependent form usually occurs before the age of 20 and effects approximately 10 percent of the total diabetic population. The pancreas produces no insulin, so daily injections of insulin are required along with a program of diet and

exercise.

THE NON-INSULIN-dependent type most often strikes people over 40, especially those who are overweight. Here the pancreas cither does not produce enough insulin, or the > body cells are resistant tp// the insulin that is produced. This form may be controlled through diet and exercise, although in some cases oral agents or insulin are required. Complications such as heart attack, gangrene, kidney disease, blindness and stroke are associated with diabetes mellitus The disease ranks as the third leading cause of death in the United States and is the number one cause of new cases of blindness.
