ERMA — A resolution authorizing the superintendent of schools to monitor teacher absenteeism and develop approaches to reduce it never got off the ground recently, after several Lower Cape May Regional teachers spoke out strongly against the measure. "What you're saying i$ that we don't trust you, we want to tie you down.” teacher Jack Weeks said of the resolution that he claimed would bc^mterpreted by staff members as an indication the board doesn’t "trust their integrity.” ACCORDING TO TEACHERS present at the Oct. 28 board session, they learned only a couple of days before the meeting that such a resblution was being considered. And they claimed that vagueness of the proposal had raised concern and many questions among the staff. Under the proposal, which board members indicated was drawn-up by Supt. Keller, the superintendent would be responsible for monitoring teachers’ absences, developing specific methods to reduce the rate of staff absenteeism, and reporting regularly on the status of staff

attendance.

ACCORDING TO KELLER, there is currently no policy dealing with teacher absenteeism, and the proposed resolution is one that has been adopted by many school boards to improve faculty atten-

dance rates.

But when asked by Teachers Assn, presi-

dent Irma McVey what prompted board consideration of the resolution, officials acknowledged they currently have no knowledge of excessive teacher absenteeism in general. But board president Paul Lundhom, said there’s a possibility some teachers may be taking advantage of their sick leave “We want to recognize that it (absenteeism) could happen," the presi dent went on, adding that the proposed policy would outline procedures for handling the situation 'when, and If,* it Should

arise.

"We’re not questioning any one individual’s attendance," he continued. "We’re doing nothing that’s not done in

private industry."

ECHOING HIS REMARKS, board member Delton Brooks emphasized he views the move to establish a staff attendance policy as "a drive to improve attendance, not to be punitive. Following lengthy 7 discussions, board members agreed that before any action is taken, the proposal should be handed over to the Policy Committee for careful

review. *

Committee chairwoman Arlene MacDonald said Monday that she and committee members Miriam Reeves and Stephen Todd would meet to study the proposal and decid^rif it should b6 pursued. That commi^e meeting was to have taken place

yeslfyday.

Mr. and Mrs. William Schroer and son, all from • Newport, R.I., advised -xjhey had become m5WH«nted due to the failure of their navigational equipment, but did believe that they were in the vicinity of the Chesapeake Bay entrance. The Cape May Coast Guard notified units in the Chesapeake Bay area, but due to the strength of the radio signal they believed the Pequod to be in the Cape May area and started
