By Jacob Schaad Jr. OCEAN CITY - Middle Township had a lot of luck on Saturday and it was ail bad. The Panthers were beaten by Ocean City. 9-7. on a deflected touchdown pass and a 42 yard free field goal kick by a player who hadn’t tried a three pointer all season. The loss turned what promised to be an upbeat day for Middle* Township into disaster' as the Panthers not only lost a bid for their first league* championship since 1969 but a chance for state tournarrtent play, they finished their season 5-3 overall and , 5-2 in the league. > THE PLAYER of the day for Ocean City was Jonathan Dice who-leads a football life as dangerous as a riverboat gambler. Dice, a 5-11 fullback and kicker, scored all of his team's points. With his team trailing. 7-0, in the waning second of the first half. Dice caught a 29 yard pass from southpaw sophomore David Miller and rolled a six pointer in the end zone. This was no ordinary pass for the Red Raiders. The ball was deflected by a Middle defender, but Dice was lucky enough to be in the right place and he grabbed • the ball and sped into the end zone. Dice, a junior was involved in one of the big ironies of the 1982 season in the third quarter when Ocean City Coach Ed Woolley bor-
rowed a page out of the book of Lower Cape May Regional's Bill Garrison. Earlier this year the Red Raiders had been beaten by Cape May on Garrison's favorite play, a free field goal attempt, permitted under the rules after a team makes a fair catch. When his team gained possession on a fair catch on Middle’s 27 yard line, Wooley gambled on Dice to kick an undefended field goal of 42 yards. After much discussion with the officials about where to place the ball, Dice'finally got the kick off and the ball, aided by a strong wind, went cleanly through the uprights to give Ocean City the 9*7 lead. AN ELATED Woolley explained after the game that while Dice had not tried any field godls during the season, ,he showed good distances in kickoffs and for this reason he gave him a shot at the game winner. Woolley and his Red Raiders were still not out of the woods, however. Late in the game Middle launched a frantic drive from its, own 43, moving the ball in 10 plays to the Ocean City 16 yard line at which point Coach Phil Exley called upon HarveyTozer/his5-7, 235 pound gbard, to try what could have been the winning field goal attempt. Talk about/ bad luck Look what happened. Tozer kicked a 31 yard field goal, but the officialsnulhfied the boot because

of a penalty—not against Middle Township, but against Ocean City! The ruling was that the Red Raiders' had encroached before the snap and that wiped out any ensuing action. The offended team has no option to accept or decline the penalty. So Tozer got a second chance, this time a 26 yarder, but there was trouble With the sqap, the ball was-blocked and Ocean City took over with 1:25 left in the game. If Ocean City had Stayed onsides. Middle would hdve wb»j the game. 10-9. The Red Raiders were euphoric after Middle’s final rally was stopped. In celebration the players jumped into a large pool of muddy wat,er near the end zone. Middle.started the game in its usual methodical fashion, scoring on its first
possession on a six play drive from its own 33. Capping the drive was a 45 yard touchdown pass from Tom Gihorski to Steve McKaig. Tozer’s kick made it 7-0. The big win ended the season on a positive note for Ocean City. The Red Raiders won three inf a row. Included was their first victory in eons over Atlantic City two weeks ago. "We’re better‘than our 5-3 record indicates." a pleased Woolley said as he savored the big win over Middle Township.
