A Different Veterans’ Day
By Jacob Schaad Jr. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - Veterans' Day in Cape May County anfi the rest of the nation wds different last Thursday. There were the usual speeches about the valiant who served their country to preserve freedom. Gun salutes again shattered the quiet solemnity of the occasion and once more, as has happened since World War I. they played ‘‘‘Taps" to memorialize those who gave their lives. The difference, though, was that after 10 years of token inclusion the veteran of the Vietnam War finally gained his place in the sum. AT TIHC COUNTY'S two year-old Memorial Park and Cemetery Freeholder Gerald Thornton, who served in Vietnam for 13 months in 1968 and 1969 as a staff segeant, said it best. “The heroes of Vietnam are just as important to us as the veterans who served in other wars," .he told a group of veterans shivering in the November wind. ‘T hope today throughout the nation and in Cape May that this special dedication to the veterans of Vietnam will heal that wound of national neglect." Meanwhile, a few miles south in the city of Cape.
another first took place earlier in an 11 a.m. ceremony at a monument at Columbia Avenue and Gurney. Street. Three plaques honoring the veterans of World War II. the Korean and Vietnam Ware were dedicated there. John T. Dopinger. commander of American Legion's Hil.fly Snyder Post and a veteran of all three ware, commented that the east wall of the monument is now blank. "Let’s hope it never will have to be used." he added. Most of the ceremonies were attended by representatives of World War I, men in their 80’s. Some Gold Star mothers also were present. There aren’t too many World War I veterans around these days. Some five million served in the American Ex* peditionary Force and there is said to be about 300,000 left in the United States. There weren’t too many Vietnam veterans in attendance, either, but leaders of veterans groups are hoping that, this long due recognition, coming 10 years after the war. will serve as an impetus for them to take over where their fathers and grandfathers left off.
