If both parents are overweight, there is an 80 percent chance their

chllden will be overweight. In contrast, if neither parerft is overweight, there’s only a seven percent chance that their children will be overweight. Dr-. Garza advises that parents avoid the clean-your-plate syndrome noting that it’s better to let children determine how much they need to eat,. Most heart attacks and strokes are caused by a •build-up of cholesterol and other fatty substances on the inner walls.of blood vessels. At present, diet, drugs, balloons and even surgery arc used to reduce those fatty deposits that can clog arteries and interfere with the flow l)f blood from the heart. In the future, researchers feel that lasers already used for a variety of medical procedures '— will be used to dissolve fatty deposits from deep within clogged arteries. Dr. Garrett Lee, of the University of California at Davis, says a special optic fiber can be threaded through the body’s major arteries to deliver a burst otfaser light directly at the obstructions. Although the procedure is still a year or two away from being used

— evert experimentally —. on humans, it alieady shows promise as.an alternative to major arterial bypass surgery. Sfnokers have switched to low tar and nicotine cigarettes have done very little for their health, according to the National Research Council. The Council reports that despite decline in the average tar and nicotine ( levels in cigarettes, deaths ' •from cancers of the respiratory system have increased. The best way to reduce health ha-zards from cigarettes is to quit smoking entirely. Although tar and nicotine levels may ,be reduced, other factors must be considered. Far*, more important, from a health standpoint, ’than the tar and nicotine content Is the amount of smoke inhaled, the number of puffs per cigarette, and how much of the cigarette is inhaled. Other hazardous substances, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen, cyanide, aren't reduced in low tar brands. These may also contribute to smokers diseases.
