If Grant Forthcoming Shortfall May Hold Up Funds

Although the township, is proceeding with the application procedure to get a slifce of some $11.3 million in federal funds targeted for neighborhood revitalization and economic development, officials here expect the funds available through the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program won’t become available for another six months. That’s the word from Committeewoman Peggie Bieberbach and township treasurer Wade Cooper. Both acknowledged Sunday they recently received information indicating the funds will not be . immediately available to qualifying municipalities. ACCORDING TO Cooper, “probably" the reason the funds are being temporarily withheld is because of a shortfall in the

state's fiscal blidget of some $62 to $150 million. He noted that the amount of federal funds coming into the state tagged for the Small Cities program has to be matched with state funds. Although a federal program, the monies available - — fhjs year through the Small Cities Program are being distributed by the sta/e. Most of the grants a# being used for projects promoting community revitalization and encouraging the creation of longtei*m employment.
