VOLUNTEER FIREMEN from Rio Grandiose "Jaws of Life" equipment to pry open car door. Demonstration showed public how equipment is used to rescue crash victims. ‘Jaws of Life * Save ■ Crash Victims
By Doris Ward RIO GRANDE - When the firemen from Rio Granfle Volunteer Fire Company were finished with their demonstration, the scene resembled a demolition derby. Within minutes doors were tom from disabled cars and roofs were peeled back, leaving gaping holes. About 60 onlookers including the Police Explorers and the Rio Grande Rescue Squad Cadets were given the opportunity to see the Jaws of Life' fn action. "WE WANTED to-show the public what these unique tools can really do,” said Chief Ralph J. Porch, who ,was responsible for'* presenting the program. "Since we acquired the Hurst O-Tool and the Jaws of Life in 1976 they have been used at least B6 times In extricating accident victims pinned in their cars. "Other fire companies in the area have similiar equipment but our large
territory consisting of Rio Grande, Green Creek, Edgewood, Whitesboro and part of Burleigh along with parts of the parkway dictate our having our own Jaws of Life immediately available,” explained Porch. /THE HYDRAULIC jaws Jre powered by a mobile 2 ^yl. Chrysler engine and are capable of moving 10 tons. During an actual accident, two teams, comprised of four men each, work in cooperation with the local rescue squads while the machine is used. Before operating the equipment there is an eight-hour training course conducted by qualified members, along with a required written test. "It’s something you |)ope you don’t have to use, but when it becomes necessary, .it can mean the difference between life and death,” assured Chief Porch.
