Aid Available For Needy

TRENTON - Human Services Commissioner George Albaoese has urged low income homeowners and tenants to apply for home energy assistance and announced the start-up of a new home energy assistance toll free hotline. The toll-free number, of 800-257-€249 is designed to give people information on the heat assistance program designed to help offset heating costs. By calling the number potential recipients will be advised where they can get applications and how to applv. v « THE NUMBER operates 9 a.im-S p.m. weekdays. After normal business h o ur s and during weekends, an answering service will take calls and refer people to appropriate agencies to obtain applications. This year the Department of Humah Serviced expects to receive $65 million dollars from the federal govemmeBt for the home energy assistance program. The department is projecting that it will serve about 207,000 households at an average benefit of $290. Last winter $51 million was distributed to 205,000 households throughout the state and the average amount receiv-t ed by each household was $250' ALBANESE.URGED those who had received heating assitance last year and qther low income people to apply as soon as possible. Funds for cooling assistance will be made available to eligible households which provide documentation of medical need. HOUSEHOLDS using oil, kerosene and electricity will receive the largest amount in benefits while households heating with all other fuels will receive lesser amounts due to the price differences. Under the; federally established income guidelines a family consisting of only one individual must have a total

monthly income at or belo\V $487 in order to receive benefits. Other maximum monthly income levels are: $648 for a family of two; $809 for a family of three; $970 for a family of four, $1131 for a family of five, and $1292 for a family of six. Most people who are recipients. of either Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) or Food Stamps will receive Home Energy Assistance benefits in two pa y m e n t s , automatically without hav-, ing to make ari application.
