SWAINTON - Cape May County’s sht existing land- ' fills will be closed by next summer as a result of recent meetings involving local landfill own^r% and representatives of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. “The purpose of these meetings of landfill operators and our office was to clarify, all the closure procedures which must be followed and to e st«o b I i s h specific timetables for the closure of the existing landfills.'' said Walter Burshtin Chief. New Jersey Depart ment of Environmental Protection. “WE ACiKEEl) that each landfill would close under existing Solid Waste and Water Quality Protection regulations,” Burshtin added. Representing the municipally owned and privately operated landfills at the meeting were representatives of Foundations & Structures. Inc. of Tuckahoe, operators of the Woodbine landfill; Dennis Township; Upper Township. Woodbine Borough, and Smith’s landfill, a privately owned and operated landfill in Lower Township THE LANDFILLS currently receive 30 to 40 per cent of Cape May Countyls total solid waste. The municipal landfills in Dennis and Upper Townships receive only municipal refuse.

The Smith landfill receives municipal refuse from Lower Township and commercial refuse, from Cape May. West Cape May, Cape May Point and Wildwood Crest. THE WOODBINE landfill receives municipal refuse from Woodbine. Sea Isle City and Avalon and commercial waste from other areas in the county. ^“Monitoring wells will be used to test tjic ground water quality for 120 criteria polluttwts," MUA Executive Dire&pr George MarinaRis statetf “Following this initial testing, the samples will be taken and re-tqsted at least twice a year by the owners to assure continued groundwater quality." . Ted O’Neill, MUA Solid 7 Waste Manager, explained that after closure each site owner must also continue to insure proper drainage and that any gases which accumulate must also be vented ‘All closure requirements and a timetable for closing each site will be contained in DEP consent agreements which each operator will be required to sign," O'NeiH' said. “These agreements will be sent by DEP in December. Then the process of closing these landfills will begin next Spring so all five will be closed by June 30, 1983. The Mar-Tee I a rvd f i 11 in Middle Township, which receives over one-half of the county’s solid waste, must be closed by that date under previousAcourt orders.
