Writers Visit Cape May

By Jot Zclnik Five travel writers and three state officials visited Cape May last week as part of a two-day tour of how New Jersey’s historic sites celebrate the holiday season. The tour was briefer than anticipated as Cape May apparently suffered from being the last spot on the agenda Thursday, Dec. 9. The group arrived from Waterloo Viliage in Stanhope two and one-half Shours late, at 8 p.m., and departed for Holly Farms east of Millville at 10:15 a.m. Friday. Because of the late arrival,. the group went directly to dinner at the Old Shire Tavern on the Washington Street Mall

and skipped a scheduled tour, of Victorian "Cottages at Christmastime." The Old Shire picked up the tab for the writers, who were joined at dinner by two dozen CapcTMay business people. The visitors wfcre ob- ' viously impressed by their overnight lodings, provided by the Brass Bed, Capt. Mey’s Inn, Hanson House, Queen Victoria Inn and the Victoria Rose. THE GROUP was led on a half-hour tour of the Emlen Physick Estate, a national landmark, by Curator Louise Zerby Friday morning, and took a 15-jninute trolley tour of U* city’s historic district, M by Carol B. Boyd Queen Victoria innkeeper

Dane Wells and Jay Schatz, owner of the Abbey, also shepherded the group during their stay. The writers, who received packeCs of promotional literature from the city, the chamber of commerce and some of the inns, were led by Victoria D. Schmidt, director of the slate Department. of Commerce’s Division of Travel and Tourism. The writers included: Shirley Horner of the New Jersey Desk of the Ndw York Times; Joyce Cunningham of the Trentonian; Marion Burdick, editor of Central Jersey Magazine; William McCann of the Atlantic City Press; and James Morris, a free-lance writer
