Seniors Hold Yule Party STONE HARBOR - Some 7Q seniors braved the fog and rain to attend their annual Christmas Party in the elementary school. They were entertained by-a-choir recital by the Middle Township High School choir under the direction of Gladys^ Laurieilo, who was m‘troduced to the group by club president Harry Strohmetz. THE CHOIR of 104 voices sang carols and other numbers appropriate to the holiday season. Following their singing the hostesses for the evening, under the direction of Mrs. Matt Wootery, served the choir fancy cookies, -cakes and punch. Christmas gifts were again sent to the Woodbine State School. Two large plastic bags were delivered to the school by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pilert.

Jersey Cape NATURALLY

One of the symbofs of the holiday season is the American Holly. While this species is familiarto all it is not the only holiday native to the northeast. In fact, there are many species t - some are evergreen, some deciduous, some have fruits which are red, others with Jruit which are black. Certain hollies are shrubs, others are more correctly classified as

trees

Two of the native shrub hollies are found in Cape May County, the most striking is the Winterberry Holly, Ilex verticiliata. In winter ip is conspicuous because of its bright waxy scarlet berries which cling to the bare branches well into the winter. This deciduous holly can be found in low ground, moist woods and swamps. It is also known as Black Alder, a very inappropriate common name because it in no way resembles the alders it just grows in the same habitat. Less showy is the Inkberry, an evergreen shrub holly with black berries. Growing in candy soil, Inkberry is very bushy with dark green, leathery leaves, shining above, paler and black dotted below'.

In general, the fruits of hollies ripen in the late summer and provide food for wildlife. Birds and mammals feed on the.fruits and deer browse the foliage.
