Friendly People Delight Visitor From Sweden

. MARMORA — Recent arrival Eva Johansson has been pleasantly surprised at the openness and friendliness of Cape May Countians. "People just start to talk to you,” said Ms. Johansson, 16, who came from Stockholm, Sweden, almost four months ago as a participant in the American Scandanavian Student Exchange Program. "There is less of that in.Sweden.” Miss Johansson, in the 10th grade at Ocean City High School, is living with Mr. and Mrs. Philip Cressman and their ' children, Cindy, 13, and Chip, 11, students at Upper township Middle School. ON SUNDAY she shared some Swedish Christmas customs with persons attending the Christmas Open House at the Historical Museum of the County Historical and Genealogical Society in

Cape May Court House'. Miss Johansson made Christmas cookies with a type of gingerbread batter and heart-shaped paper Christmas decorations to hold candy. ' ( / Christmas jn Sweden, she said, is strictly a Christmas Eve celebration. The traditional meal is ham or pork. Religious observances are minimal, she said. «The churches

are empty.”

Santa Claus — he^s called "Jultomte” in Swedish — comes just as heavilyladen as in this country apparently, since Miss Johannson remembers a.younger brother receiving 25 or 30

gifts last year.

HER FATHER. Bjorn, is a computer analyst with, private industry; her mother, Birgitta, is a computer programmer for the government. Miss Joiansson’s trip will have (pt her about $2,000, mostly for transportation.

even numeral and your vehicle is due for inspection this month, don’t wait until the last minute to visit a New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles’ Inspection Station, warns DMV Director Clifford W. Snedeker. New Jersey's 38 inspec tion stations will be closed on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 24 and 25, and again the following Friday and Saturday, Dec. 31 and Jan.

1.

"MOTORISTS SHOULD get their cars inspected now if they don't want to get caught in a last-rrtinute inspection line," Snedeker said. "There is almost no waiting time at any one of the stations now, but that will change after Christmas when the procrastinators finally decide to get moving." The DMV Director disc reminds motorists that holiday spirits are better

THIRTY TWO PER-

CENT of the individuals killed on New Jersey roadways last year were the result of drunk driverswthose individuals whose blood alcohol concentration was 0.10 per cent or

higher," Snedeker said. "In addition, another 10

per cent of those killed last year had consumed at least some alcohol before the ac-

cident," Snedeker said. THE THREE-DAY

Christmas holiday last year saw 17 individuals die in 16 accidents on New Jersey roads and three of those deaths were the result of drunk driving,"

Snedeker said. / "So enjoy the holidays,

but don’t drive if you’ve been drinking and, when *You do drive, protect yourself from drunk drivers by wearing your seatbelt and harness at all

times," Snededker said.

Miss Johannson thinks , the American Christmas is' "more plastic” than in Sweden, where more decorative use is mgde of branches, straw, apples,

etc.

Although warned by the' exchange program not to be critical of anything American, Miss Johansson did single out U S. television for too much violence. There are'only two chan- ' nels in Sweden, she said. Both are state-operated, have no commercials and edit out violence from American shows. She watches "Mash," "Soap,” “Dallas,” and "Benson" in Sweden. The Johanssons actually live in Alvsjo, "an oldfashioned suburb" of Stockholm where most of the houses are old and onefamily, she said. MISS JOHANSSON has traveled in Norway, Finland, Denmark, .and Austria and spent one month in England. She speaks excellent English and also takes French in school. At Ocean City, she's receiving A’s and B's except for an C in gymnasium. She’s dateless so far, which she attributes to the fact that all the young men are "too short." Miss Johansson is 5-11. The Cressmans became interested in hosting an exchange student because of the experiences ofCressman's parents. Dr. and Mrs. Charles Cressman, who had students from Norway and Japan when they lived in Grove City. Pa. The Cressmans treat Miss Johansson as "one of our .own" and that includes expecting her to clean her own bedroom. Cressman is a hearing aid specialist in Atlantic City. Mrs. Cressman teaches second grade at Upper Township Elementary School. The Cressman’s cats, Sammy and Katie, are especially appreciated by Miss Johansson who loves animals, but couldn't have a piet because her younger brother .was allergic to them.
