TRENTON - New Jersey hunters took 10,116 deer during the six-day regular firearm season which ended Dec. 11. Although the total is the second highest harvest of the season, it is 369 fewer deer than were taken last year. Cape May County literally bucked the trend, with' 150 deer bagged against 122 in 1981. THE DIVISION of Fish. Game and Wildlife attributed the lower harvest to generally poor deer hunting weather on both the opening and closing day of

theseason.

The weather was’ especially poor on opening day in the southern and

loastal, areas of the state iiimber of deer taken lantic, Ocean and

Burlington counties was significantly below . last

j'ear.

Weather Aids Deer Harvest

TRENTON - The New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife said that good weather plus a sizeable deer population resulted in an overall excellent hunt for the special permit shotgun season Dec. 15 and 16. A total of 5,436 deer were taken during the two-day season. Of the total, 5,356, including 59 in Cape May County, were taken Wednesday, Dec. 15, and 80 deer were taken the following day when hunting was allowed only in deer zones 15, 14, 16, 22 and 42.

EVEN IN Hunterdon County, which traditionally ' has the highest' number of deer taken, the harvest was down by 167 deer. Sussex County, however, was up by more than 200 deer. The Division said that the deer taken throughout the state were in good condition and that there were -many large (140 to 200-pound) deer recorded at the check stations. There were also large numbers of deer taken with large racks.
