NEWARK - There have been some changes in the way customers obtain Bell System telephones, effective Jan. 1. Thirteen of New Jersey Bell’s 44 PhoneCenters will be transferred to American Bell, Inc. (ABI), a separate subsidiary of AT&T. These PhoneCenters, located in major shopping malls, will sell telephone equipment but will not provide other services. The ABI stores will compete with other suppliers of equipment on an unregulated basis. NEW JERSEY Bell will continue to sell or lease telephones in inventory as of Dec. 31, 1982, until the supply runs out. They will offer telephones for new service or changes in service, arrange for replacement of defective New Jersey Bell equipment, and accept returned sets when service os discontinued. AN ADDITIONAL 16 New Jersey Bell Service Centers have been opened for the convenience of customers. These changes are required by a Federal Communications Commission ruling that, beginning Jan. I, the Bell System must offer new telephone equipment (except that in inventory as of Dec. 31) and enhanced services through a separate subsidiary only. Enhanced services are those that change or store information.
