Telephone Tax Up Again
NEWARK - The federal excise tax on telephone service increased from one percent to three percent Jan l, as part of a tax package adopted by Congress this summer. New Jersey Bell estimates that the two per cent increase equates to an annual increase of about $875 per residental customer CM) EH THE plan adopted in August, the telephone excise tax will be three percent through 1983. 1984 and 1985 The tax then would be abolished, unless Congress acts again The federal excise tax is paid on most local service and equipment charges and on charges for in
terstate and intrastate long distance calls CONGRESS FIRST im posed the excise tax during World War I as a temporary measure Although repealed briefly after the war. it was reinstated dur ing the Depression During the 1940s and 1930s, the rate was as high as 15 percent on local telephone service and 25 percent on long distance service Several years ago. Congress voted to gradually eliminate the tax. which had stood at 10 percent for almost 20 years In recent , years, it has dropped one percent each year and was scheduled (o be one percept in 1981 and eliminated,^! the end of I9R2
