that the department will proceed with plans for major highways this year in eluding the first section of Route 55 in Gloucester County, the Rancocas Creek Bridge in Burlington County, part of Route 295 in Mercer County, and the dualization of the next sec tion of Route 9 in Howell

Township.

Sheridan said he was particularly pleased at being able to move forward in fulfilling Governor Thomas H Keen's commitment to construct Route 55 SHERIDAN SAID the department could have lost as many as 200 people from the construction engineering staff if the Governor had been forced to cut the state budget by three

percent

"The loss of these fine professionals is something which could not have been quickly reversed The cuts would h a v e^h a d a devastating long-term im pact on the highway construction program and the state's economy at a time when we can ill afford it." Sheridan said In lilting the moratorium, Sheridan pointed out that the Depart ment will still be required to take some budget cuts, since the legislative package worked out bet . ween the-Governor and the legislature mandated that the State budget be reduced by WO million However. Sheridan indicated fhrtt DOT'S share of the cuts can be accomplished without

layoffs.
