SOUTH JERSEY Regional theatre's sub scription audience has grown by over 27 percent in the past year "That increase has pushed us well over the 1,500 mark for subscribers." notes Rob Chambers, SJRT Audience Development Director. What does Aiken attribute this growth to? ‘High quality and reasonable prices.'' he says with a smile. "We are the only year-round professional theatre in South Jersey. A few ‘holdouts' still have the notion that we're amateur, but that's simply not the case Most people now realize that our casts, our directors and our designers arc Broadway calibre." IN THE SPRING of 1981, SJRT signed a letter of agreement with Actors' Equity Association (the professional stage actors' union). SJRT must now use a certain number of AEA actors in each production, And if there are any remaining roles, they are usually cast in New York from actors working on their union membership Occasionally, though. Benefit Show on For Pier OCEAN CITY - A country music program and variety show to obtain money and materials for homeless persons will be held at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan 22. The "Unknown County Band" will begin the program. followed by a variety show featuring South Jersey School of Baton The country music group will conclude the show with a second appearance TONI ANN GISONDI. who starred as the smallest orphan in the movie version of Annie, will be special guest Admission will be by donation of money, canned food, blankets or clothing The show will culminate a month-long effort by the city to help homeless persons » “THIS ISOceafl City's effort to help those less fortunate who have lost their jobs and homes because of the prolonged recession,” noted Mark Soifer. city public relations director "We have already taken many truckloads of material to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, which is doing a fine job in helping the homeless in our area " THE MUSICAL program is produced by Priscilla Parker, *8outh Jersey School of Baton, who serves as the city's volunteer entertainment director "The Unknown Country Band" has been featured al "Yesterday's" and other night spots throughout the Delaware Valley The city's "Help for the Homeless" drive began in late December with dropoff centers at the Fire Station, 9th and Asbury Ave.. and the Music Pier Those wishing to donate money should make checks payable to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission For infor mation. contact the Public Relations Department, 399-6111, Ext 222
Aiken will hold local auditions (as for the upcoming production of Deathtrap).. But he makes it clear that if he doesn't find the same high quality actors here, he will immediately head to New York for auditions. "WE HAVE AN obligation tq produce the best live theatre for the residents of Soutif'farsey. High quality and Variety are our major considerations," says Aiken. In this vein. SJRT integrates into its season some plays which would otherwise escape the public
eye.
As Aiken explains it, that is the role of a regional theatre — to bring a variety of artistically outstan ding plays to its area As a non-profit theatre, SJRT doesn.’t concern itself with making huge profits. SJRT concerns itself instead with producing good theatre ''And at a very reasonable price," Aiken quickly notes "What it costs for a season ticket to our theatre, would buy just one ticket to a commercial production in Philadelphia or New York "

Front SJR T To Broadway SOMERS POINT - A theatre critic recently said, "Broadway comes to the bay each time the curtain goes up on a South Jersey Regional Theatre production." Now a former SJRT acter is raising curtains on Broadway. BRIAN REDDY, who played Pelinore in SJRT’s 1978 production of Camelot. is in the cast of Eva LaGalienne's Broadway revival of Alice in Wonderland. Reddy has the honor of sharing the stage with Miss LaGalienne and Richard Burton's daughter, who plays Alice in this production Not only that, but Reddy was singled out by New Yorker magazine's Brenden Gil) for praise.
