Women’s Club Has 70th Birthday
By Al Westhoff STONE HARBOR - In 1913. just 70 years ago. the Women s Civic Club of this tiny borough was organized. one full year before the borough was incorporated To celebrate this joyous and memorable occasion the club is planning a number of events to be held throughout the year as an observance of the many years of service to the community WHEN THE CLUB was organized the founders never visualized that today they would have-over 160 members Neither did they dream the club would expand its activities in the community to cover the wide range of projects that has kept them active over seven decades In this 70-year span the dub has had 23 presidents, the first of whom was Miss Mane Van Thuyne Some of her relatives still live in the borough THE CURRENT presi dent is Mrs Gerald, 'Dot lie t Stump, whose mother was a club member star ling in 1923. This is Mrs Stump s second term in of fice. as she served from
1973 to 1977 Her present term started in 1979 and will expire in 1983. Today, as when the club wds first started, the bytiyws stated that the object of the club is “To promote the beauty of Stone Harbor, to cooperate with the borough council, to encourage wholesome activities among the youth, to aid in all efforts to improve the borough in Its artistic aspects and to promote cooperation and friendship among the women." Blue and Gold, and the club flower is the Lily bf the Valiev AFTER THE (T.l'B was founded and for many years meetings were held in individual homes in the borough in the summer and in Philadelphia in the winter until in 1937 the members voted to build their own club house at 96th St and the beach.
In the early years, true to their commitment to youth, they formed a Community League to provide amusements for young people They ran very sue cessful entertainments at Dr Watkins' moving pic ture place on the old boardwalk Proceeds from these events were used to pay in tcrest on the mortgage of the Fire Company and the company's fire insurance premiums. THEY CONTINUED their efforts to help others by holding daily afternoon programs in the first floor of the original Shelter Haven Hotel They held the First NigHt in Venice in the Shelter Haven basin, hav mg a dock connected to a boat carnival The proceeds from this event went to the Indies Auxiliary of the Fire Company for winter entertainment in 1919 In the 20s the club originated the annual Baby Parade: they presented the borough with its first public rest rooms In the 30s they built and turned over to the borough two pavilions with reversible benches that < Pafce 23 Please >
