Alcoholism Project at Burdette
COURT tfOUSE- A new program of alcoholism prevention and treatment opened at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital this week. The Cape May County Council on Alcoholism is funded with a $25,000 grant from the slate Division of Alcoholism Trudi Rioux of Cold Spring is its director She ll be hiring a part-time consultant-educator The hospital is providing space in tis Social Services Department Ms Rioux cites state estimates that the county has twice the alcoholism rate of the state average — 13 6 percent vs 6 6 percent. Her efforts will focus on groups thought to have the greatest counseling need, youth, women and minorities THE STATE SAYS 19 percent of youths 14-17 are problem drinkers It also says 10 percent of males over fit) are problem drinkers compar'd to 2 percent of females But Ms Rioux feels that is ‘not necessarily accurate because males seek treatment more readily than females" who. she said, are less aware, of drinking problems and more concerned about social stigma "We want to reach out to them," she said With cooperation from Burdette Tomlin s medical staff, Ms Rioux hopes to identify people in its emergency room who have drinking problems She ll refer them to rehabilitation or treatment This is the county’s only alcoholism program except for Operation Junction, an outpatient treatment pro gram for drug and alcohol abusers in Wildwood and Ocean City The county has no detox ificalion centers, she said "That's part of the problem" MS. RIOl'X SEES a number of reasons for the county's estimated high alcoholism rate • The lifestyle that ac eompames seasonal work People expand all their energies in the summer, she said, then "things stop in the winter, there are not a lot of entertainment or cultural activities and peo
TiU Dl RIOUX pie isolate themselves Looking for entertainment, they turn to the bdttlc " • The large number of older and retired persons who are isolated, lacking social activities, and forgotton by their families She tells of two daughters from oift-of-stale who came to visit their elderly mother and found her "in terrible condition, disoriented, her house closed up She'd been drunk for days and had no food ' They took her to Burdette Tomlin where the only alcoholism-geared support available came from Alcoholics Annonymous Miss Rioux. 35, a nor-
