several years, most employes worked only

a few months a year.

It manufactured magnesite, a hightenmerature refractory used to make brinks for kilns in steel mills The steel industry's depression reportedly killed the

demand for magnesite

ONE OF THE LARGEST rateables in Lower Township, the plant is assessed at $2.2 million and paid almost $71,000 in taxes last year That included $16,233 to the township, $14,173 to the county, $19,927 to the Lower Township Elementary School District and $20,487 to the Lower Cape May

Regional School District.

Lower Township Mayor Peggie Richer bach said it was the loss of jobs, not taxes, that concerned her. "What will all the people do until summer employment starts?'* i she said. "It goes to show just how bad the recession is. Here we are building, building, building, and where are all the

jobs coming from?"

The plant's closing had been widely i rumored, but many employes remained < hopeful Harbisop-Walker would choose to modernize the plant instead I WILLIAM DeVOS. 41, of Del Haven. I learned the plant would be closed with a j phone call from a fellow employe over the i weekend He had worked here fbr 14 years < "Everybody was expecting we'ago back," he said. I DeVos and his wife, Sandra, have three children aged 7, 8 and 12. < ^ews Notes from

High) of CMCH and Tom and Alice Clydesdale (he’s Committeeman and former mayor of Lower Twp.) of Cold Spring. Winners had been announced earlier so it wasn’t n big surprise ex cept that James Mmemeci who won second prize in the Best Doorway category, is a 6th grader at S.H. Elementary School. To our knowledge he's the youngest winner ever in the competition. Ed Yaeger outthought everybody by getting himself born 69 years ago to the day. Isn’t everybody who can brag about having 136 people celebrate his birthday! After the awards and the B-day cake was marched up to Ed, principal speaker Mayor Arden Hand had his turn at the podium. He had a tough act to follow The mayor summed up the Borough's accomplishmcnts for the year and its hopes for the future He announced that 104th St. Bridge repairs will be com pleted by Memorial Day and that only one traffic lane will be closed at a time.

He had worked in recent months as a driver for Wildwood Linen, as a dish washer at the Lobster House in Cape May, and as a laborer for the B Right Construe tion Co. of Philadelphia which is building homes at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. He was laid off from all three jobs, the last only two weeks ago, and is collecting $144 a week in unemploy

unemployment,” he said.

As he looked for work, he said, he en coutcred "a bunch of people in the same

boat as I am."

HE SAID HE HAS considered selling water purifyers, but lacks the $200

necessary for a sales kit.

"Many people have been very nice," he said "Some gave us clothes for the kids, food for the table " He singled out fellow members of the Covenant Bible Church at

Fishing Creek.

"The worst thing," he said, "is not know ing you have a good job, purposeful employment, tc go to the next morning " DeVos said he wouldn't "blame" anyone for the plant closing. But he said he felt there was a "conglomeration of causes" including "the big wigs, people who have money." He said he thought the closing could be "part of God’s judgement on Americans for the wicked way they’ve

been living."

He said he will "pray for another job, sell the house, and go where the job is."

ONE OF OUR favorite shopping spots down here is the Lobster House Fish Market in Cold Spring. We’ve loved it for years for the quality seafood it provides. Now we especially love it because, while hin ting we're obviously too young to be interested in their Senior citizen discount, it’s available to anyone who fits the age

bracket
