Agriculture Award To Tuckahoe Farmer

By Doris Ward TUCKAHOE — A strong sense of pride and a thirst for independence motivated Vincent DiLuzio to leave his native town of Torricella-Peligna, Italy, as a young man over 67 years ago and begin a new life in United States. The same integrity and dedication to excellence have earned the 83-year-old commercial farmer the Distinguished Service Award in Agriculture, one of the state's most prestigious awards. Althouglf DiLuzio has received7numerous cita tions over the years, he is perhaps proudest of this latest accomplishment as it reflects the approval and esteem of his colleagues for a lifetime of dedicated service to New Jersey agriculture. OFFICIAL presentation will take place during the the 1963 State Agricultural Convention at the Cherry Hill Inn Jan. 26. "Although a good relationship with the state extension service has helped immensely over the years, without the assistance of my family it would have been impossible, he said The DiLuzio's 2-story farm house with its beautifully landscaped lawn sits back almost 1,000 feet from the highway on Rt *9 overlooking thd Tuckahoe River. The ac ] cess to the river with it^ potential for irrigation was a prime factor in DiLuzio’s decision to leave his work in the Chester, Pa., Baldwin Ammunitation Works and settle in this vicinity. "I was probably one of the first in the county to attempt extensive irrigation," said the soft-spoken agriculturist • IT IS DIFFICULT to visualize now that this area was once completly covered with trees and brush A lot of hard work

went into clearing the land," he added. “My first crop of vegetables was eaten by deer. The state refused to fence them from my land, but when I threatened to ‘handle it myself,' it wasn't too long before officials came down and sprayed a repellent on the grounds to discourage the animals. "To build up the land, I traveled to Wilmington, Del., sometimes three times a day for free fertilizer. That was during World War II when we had to tape the headlights for night driver. It was a long, bleak trip." DILUZIO’S VENTURE grew from a one-man truck farm into a successful commercial operation that now includes a packing house Most of the produce is sold to chain markets, but a roadside stand still serves local clientele and passing motorists. Hard work and long hours have not prevented DiLuzio from participating in civic affairs. He was instrumental in founding the Fire Company in Tuckahoe and is a lifetime charter member. He has served on the board of managers of Cook College at Rutgers University and the board of directors of Glassboro Laborers Association. He was also involved in organizing the Experimental Station in Centerton. A debilitating ailment in his left arm has forced DiLuzio to partially retire Topic ‘Whose Creed Is It?"
