Suit Filed to Halt Dumping CITING “serious risks to human health and the coastal environment." the National Wildlife Federation and the New Jersey State Federation of Sport smen’s Clubs is suing to stop six New Jersey sewerage authorities from dumping contaminated sewage sludge in the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the con taminants in the authorities' waste are known to be harmful to human health and the marine environment. These include PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), toxic metals and petroleum hydrocarbons This contaminated sludge, which is among the most toxic in the country, is being dumped 12 miles off the coast of New York and New Jersey in an area known as the New York Bight Apex "Our oceans should not become a free and easy dumping ground." said Jay D Hair, executive vice president of the federation. "The New York Bight area — despite its current pollution — is stilus valuable habitat for commercial and sport fishing, and is an important spawning ground for many fish and shellfish in the mid-Atlantic." 'The ocean dumping of toxic sludge is not only a threat to this marine life

v, and to the health of those who consume con laminated seafood, but is also glaringly illegal," he added. According to the lawsuil, the incidence of disease in fish and shellfish is higher in the New York Bight area than in other areas along the Atlantic Coast. The suit also says (hat ocean dumping of sewage sludge depletes the oxygen

levels of water necesssary to support life, and alters the diversity of marine organisms Named in the suit are six New Jersey sewerage authorities, the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and Federal Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Anne M Gorsuch.
