Commisison Votes On Bike Ban Tues.

By Bob Shilm COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Bridge Commission is expected to vote again Tuesday, Feb. 8. on its controversial bike ban affecting Ocean Drive bridges. Commission officials confirmed Monday that the ban will be reconsidered at the 1:30 p.m. meeting at

the Crest Haven Complex. Last month, the Cape May County Planning Board opted to take no position on the issue until it has a chance to hear representatives of bikers’ interests at its next meeting, Feb. 15. COMMISSIONERS contend the ban is for safety reasons Commission General Manager Wister Dougherty has pointed to the hazards of increased traffic and the narrowness of bridges as the major problems. But biking enthusiasts, including the Philadelphia based League of American Wheelmen, argue a public education program, not a ban, would be a more efficient approach to improving safety They say bicycles are a legitimate means of transportation used by many to travel throughout the county, and have indicated legal recourse may be taken if the ban continues Although agreeing there is a problem on some of the bridges in summer, county Freeholder Gerald Thorn ton recently said any decision by the commission or the county planning board to support a bike ban is "certainly in conflict" with the county’s master plan for transportation development

HE POINTED OUT that in the mid-1970% when the planning board was his department, a federal grant had been obtained to establish h bikeway along Ocean Drive from Cape May to Ocean City. County Transportation Planner Robert Connor agreed. "It (ban) could be considered a conflict," he said. "My position is, let peo^ pie walk across with their bicycles." There are too many people that depend on the bridges to get back and forth to work in the summertime...It's not fair to restrict everyone who bicycles," Thornton said THE FREEHOLDER stressed that he believes there arc alternatives that should be looked into "If people are allowed to walk across bridges, they should be able to walk their bikes over.” Freeholder James Kilpatrick, recently appointed to the county Planning Board, said at last month’s meeting that he personally supports the bridge commission's action. By Bob Shiles ERMA - Vandals entered the Lower Cape May Regional High School early last Tuesday and walked off with more than $4,000 worth of audio-visual and musical equipment According to school of ficials, forced entrance to the band room and library was made by breaking out side windows The incident occurred sometime bet ween midnight and 5 a m . and was discovered by the school’s night watchman l,ower Townhip police said Sunday the burglary is still under investigation, but declined further comment. # "I don’t think vandalism was the motive. - ' Superintendent of Schools Ephraim Keller said, noting that broken windows were the only damage to the building "It had to be , someone who knew what they wanted and where to get it It had to l)e someone who knew the building According to Keller and band director Edward Jurewicz, items stolen include an amplifier, a syn-

thesizer, several microphones and some tape recorders. Also miss ing a»e a 35mm camera with several lenses, an in stamatic camera, a 28mm projector, and a super tt movie cam ra and projector None of the items have been recovered Jurewicz told the regional school board last Thursday that the burglars had to work hard to gel the equipment out of the band room because musical items are stored behind bars and padlocked "The bars and locks kept a bad situation from being worse," he said. "It's a good feeling to know they had to work hard to get the equipment " The director said he believes it's imperative that the board consider installing some type of alarm system to discourage similar incidents "I'm afraid this burglary may serve as a precedent for other incidents." he said "If an alarm system isn't install6d, I fear for the worst."
