A FAMILIAR FIGURE In the Wildwoods for many seasons was Tom Gola. An ex-host at Zaberer’s Anglesea Inn, Gola is often mentioned as an aspirant for mayor of Philly or lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. Gola has recently been regional administrator of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Gola had virtually disappeared from public life after leaving the controller’s office in 1974. Cola’s name became a household word in Philly and the Wildwoods in the 1950s when he starred on the LaSalle College basketball team. He led LaSalle to the national championship in 1954. After turning professional, he starred for 11 years in the National Basketball Association with the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors and the New York Knicks. DENNIS DAY was the singer on the Jack Benny show for 25 years. A few years ago, he summered on stage at Cozy Morley’s Club Avalon. He now writes area friends to let them know he’ll be back in the area St. Patrick’s eve to headline shows at Valley Forge Music Fair. WITH 59 DRINKING establishments in Wildwood and many, more in North WildwoodanoDia^ mond Beach, taverns are one of the island's most important businesses. Since the drinking age was raised to 21, there seems to be some confusion regarding the permissable age of employes in licensed premises. At 18, anyone may be employed to sell or serve alcoholic beverages. That includes waiters, waitresses, bartenders and clerks. In addition, at age 16, a person may be

employed in a bona fide restaurant to perform the duties of other than selling and serving. They may be used as busboys, for general cleaning, working in the kitchen. One important exception — an entertainer (including musicians) may not be employed unless he is 18 years old. The local and county licensed beverage associations are eagerly awaiting word that the Legislature has stopped “dragging its heels’’ and placed the legal gambling age at 21 as well. PHILLY CHAMBER of Commerce President Thktcher I^ongHtreth appears in our area occasionally. He is well remembered for ad-

dresses at Neil’s banquets. Speaking at Vineland YM CA, he predicted the location of computer and health care industries in Cumberland and Cape May counties within the ne*t few years. He predicts development of a medical school in the area. The computer industry's drawing card for Cape county municipalities, according to Longstreth, is that it is environmentally clean, employs many skilled workers and lends itself to small, easily managed factories. “This industry also has a tendency to multiply," he said. "People get good ideas and split off from the company, forming their own. It can be'Hpiitless." SIGNS OF' Spring: After of closings, two restaurants have reopened. Sidewalk superintendents, bundle up and head for the Boardwalk. Gus Pavlov's brand new Snow White restaurant looks as? if it will be ready for its spring opening. Other new shops and arcades are also rising in the Schellenger Avenue block razed by fire last August. Activity is never ceasing at Morey’s Enterprises. Pilings bulkheads and a

surfside Boardwalk are being added for the expansion of Mariner’s Landing with ne«' rides and shops. Much needed repairs are under way on the Crest Fishing Pier. Like a sleeping giant, the island's 13,000 motel rooms are being whipped into shape for the busiest slate of conclaves ever in the

Wildwoods. At least a fifth have been busy all winter with carpet, furniture and painting crews giving them face liftings. TOM PARSONS. Ad ministrator for the Motel Association, is completing a survey of the 464 motels that furnish swimming pools. Well over 400 pools are provided on the island

snuggled expensively near the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed the survey will show that the Wildwoods have more swimming pools per capita than Palm Springs or Beverly Hills.
