80MPH Winds Clocked
By M'Ellen Rowland STONE HARBOR - The Seven-Mill Beach suffered relatively little damage from the “blizzard of 'KT considering the fact that Norman Tozour, 1617th St., Avalon, clocked winds up . to 80 mph. at the inlet on Friday, Feb. 11. At 3:07 p.m. in Stone Harbor, the Fire Department received a call that the Beach Patrol Maintenance Building at 95th Street was on fire. Under supervision of fire chief Doug McClure, two engine companies arrived immediately and quelled the blaze caused by an electrical fault, thus saving the borough at least six fiberglass lifeboats, two jeeps, and other beach maintenance equipment. Had the building been razed, the adjacent Women’s Civic Club would almost undoubtedly have gone too. At 5:55 p.m., Robert J. Rosborough, Jr. 8607 Second Avenue, Stone Harbor, reported that his garage had been struck by
a freak bolt of lightening. That fire also was quickly contained to the inside of the building. Avalon sustained severe beach erosion at 64th St., approximately where a
Hazardous Driving
Cape May County residents early this week were still busy digging out from last Friday’s blizzard. Roadways patched with snow and ice were causing hazardous driving conditions in several areas, especially the Wildwoods. The storm, described by weather officials as the most "ferocious" in 40 years, blew in from the south early Friday morning, Feb. 11. dumping more than a foot of snow throughout South Jersey before endjog about midnight Satun&y. With winds gusting up to 60 mph, waist-high drifts and stranded motorists were a common sight along county roadways. By 1 p.m. all activity virtually came to a standstill. Schools, businesses, roads and bridges were closed and residents were urged to remain in their homes until the storm ended. IN LOWER TOWNSHIP, all traffic except emergency vehicles were banned.
