Fifth-Graders Hear Matalucci

By ROWENA BACUNGAN As a follow-up to a recent visit to Cape May City Elementary School by a lecturer from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the students in Thomas Levin’s fifth grade class invited an eyewitness to the most recent space shuttle landing to speak about his experience Phil Matalucci, Cape May County treasurer and GOP chairman, described his recent visit to California to witness the landing of the fifth space shuttle mission. He described how Columbia appeared in the early morning light, how it approached the landing site and his feelings of both pride and excitement as the shuttle landed. The students listened intently as Matalucci recounted his experience and asked many questions that arose in their minds as he spoke. He also showed a number of souvenirs he obtained at the site, including one all the students wished they had: A NASA hat! scale'model, bpsed on encyclopedia information, of the /ending site, in ,p r rp aration for Matalucci’s visit. It was to be used as a model from which MatalQcci could illustrate the landing. The class was pleased to learn from their guest that their scale model was exact in its general layout and detail. As an expression of their appreciation for Matalucci

coming to visit them, the students named their scale model base: “The Matalucci Space Shuttle Base." Matalucci ended the program by expressing the hope that perhaps a future astronaut would someday come from the students with whom he visited and spoke that day. Roweno Bacungan is a fifth-grade student at Cape May City Elementary School.
