The State We're In Space Heaters Can Pollute Air By DAVID F. MOORE Executive Director New Jersey Conservation Foundation The environment is as big as all outdoors, but , sometimes we have to pull up short and realize that the environment is wherever we happen to be, even in a tightly sealed room or building. And that’s the environment I’m addressing today. I’m referring to what happens in a tightly closed space when pollutants are introduced, namely an overabundance of unwanted things like nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, depletion of oxygen and, potentially worst of all, carbon monoxide. They are the possible unwanted byproducts of kerosene space heaters. Somehow, whenever we seem to have a good thing going, something emerges that shoots down some of our best solutions to environmental problems. AS WE TIGHTEN UPflur homes to keep Warmth intact in the winter and coolness in the summertime, closing up holes and insulating the walls and windows better, we also cut down on the number' of times p<5r hour that the air changes in our living spacC: The^sult is that indoor air pollution is becoming a much more critical problem than it used to be. Some of our most efficient heating devices bum gas (bottled or piped) or kerosene They are the so-called spaca^M^ters. Aside from the conventional fire hazards of kerosene heaters ihow mufti less due to automatic shutoffs), we now have a new one — indoor air pollution. A recent study done under laboratory conditions at the Yale University School of Medicine shows that kerosene heaters of both the radiant and convective heating types can have major impacts on indoor air, even when it’s in a ventilated area. They are safe enough if there's enough ventilation, hut everybody should be forewarned Is in Town 9

In response to constant letters from .Joseph H Davis, the time to answer is overdue 9 There is a healing process taking place in Lower Towpship that is working Under the expert leadership of Gerald Thornton, we are experiencing a feeling of cooperation and dedication to the Republican Party Davis has become an infection to this healing process I do not know wbat hi' is trying to prove Davis professes he is a regular Republican, but is doing everything in his power to tear down the organization Davis contends that Rill Hevener was soundly defeated by the Democratic candidate Not so The voter pie was divided into three parts, not two The Democratic can didate gdt the larger slice of that pie There were some mistakes trade last year for sure, but these mistakr-s did not lose the section A division of party loyalty, personality conflicts and support for independent Joe Link did The Republican Party will survive. We have our job to do So I say to Joseph Davis, support it or leave it Stop playing the Devils Advocate Joseph k dorr Lower township

Letters U elnotie The Herald and l antern welcome letters to the ediloi on matters ol public interest Originals, not copies are requested. Writers should sign name, address and phone number

By JANE ANN CUNNINGHAM ST JOHN — Heard at the dock in Cruz Bay: a sailor got off one of the ferries from St Thomas and asked, "Where can I get a cab to town’’" A taxi driver answered. "Man. you is in town?" To strangers accustomed to docking at ports in Puerto Rtco, St. Thomas, and many of the other Caribbean Islands, Cruz Bay must look rural The half-moon shaped bay is filled with sail boats On the left point is the old fort, a brilliant white with a red roof On the right is Gallows Point The crescent is a sandy beach, shaded by palm trees, and broken only by the dock where the ferries pull in "DOWN TOWN" Cruz Bay is a relatively small area Taxis and safari busses (about 10 altogether) park near the dock Across the road from the dock is a park Tall

trees shade paths, the benches and the gardens The park makes up about one^juarter of a square bounded by narrow streets (none of which have names) Another corner is taken up by the clinic, and another by the Post Office. Small shops take up the iyst of the space in the squate-. - The North Shore Road has four or five shops plus the prize-winning architectural structure called Mongoose Junction which holds stores and a restaurant • A bank, variety store and small food stores are on the other nameless roads. No tall buildings, no big motels, no fancy restuarants. You can still see a few chickens crossing the road, ljut the goats rarely make it to the square Mrs. Cunning/iom. of Avalon, is the former publisher of the Herald.

And Awake Last chance to Show You’re Alive

By JOE ZELMK I m getting a little concerned about you people A couple of week ago. I ran a "warming drink" contest dnd nobody brought me any Then we published pictures of a half-dozen members of a terrorist group New Jersey Stale Police think could be hiding in Cape May County and nobody turned 'em in. I recommended a drink at the Ugly Mug in Cape May called the "Apple Knocker" and found out this week that they've discontinued it because of lack of demand What ever happened to the power of the press 7 I’m going to give you one more chance to show me you're alive and awake One more contest And if we're not swamped with as many entries as the Rio Grande Dunkin' Donuts got with its "February Carnival Raffle." I'm just going to have to stop offering valuable prizes I got this idea from Sweden I get a lot of ideas from Sweden, but most ofjthenf I can't write about In this case. Sweden is running newspaper ads appealing to their citizens <o report any Soviet bloc submarines thev sight Now you and I know there are plenty of Soviet-bloc submarines that Cd^e May Countians can sight — in the ocean, in the bay. m the harbor, in Townsends Inlet Call me and. I promtse, for every verified Soviet-bloc submarine Sighted. I will award a suitable prize SOME OF YOU may think it would Im? more appropriate to report Soviet-bloc submarines to the Cape May Coast Guard base Have you ever called the Cape May Coast Guard base 7 I love the Cape May Coast Guard base and everybody there I am thankful for the job they do I wouldn't say a bad thing about them for the world But getting a telephone call through to your party at that base is a challenge lhat requires more perseverance than most civilians possess I am under the impression there is really_qnly one telephone at lhat base, and it's be mg used by a number s writer Only one person is tougher to reach than anyone at the Coast Guard base Kathryn A Willis, clerk of the board of Cape May County Freeholders ^ Mrs Willis can lx 1 reached ()7 percent of the lime THIS IS NOT. I hasten to add. because Mrs Willis is not at her job Nor is it, I again hasten to add*because she is not doing her job

On the contray. Mrs W'lllis. who is a full-time person, apparently is charged with doing the work of five freeholders, who are part-time persons I know for a fact that she opens their mail, reads them their mail, and answers their mail How would you like to do lhat for five politicians 7 This, and countless other tasks, understandably keep Mrs W'lllis so busy that she almost never lakes a phone call and returns a phone call even less. For these reasons, Mrs Willis is absolved from repor ting any Soviet-bloc submarines she may sight. But not the rest of you .
