Sounds
By Charles P. Lamey
■ Of the current crop of electronic pop bands tljat are finding chart success. Los Angeles' Missing Per sons are certainly better than most Whal sets them apart is the fact their sound isn't totally dependent on synthesizers, hut. instead fuses the electronics with Warren Cuccumllo's fluid guitar playing and Terry Kozzio's explosive, yet complex drumming Their debut album, Spr ing Session M (Capitol > has its share of memorable tracks, but, unfortunately Dale Bozzio's cute, half spoken, half sung vocal style tends to grow tiresome after a while. Missing Persons are for tunate to have such a unique frontperson, but one has to wonder how far they can take this approach and keep record buyers interested. Meanwhile, Miss-
ing Persons are off to a fly ing start Since the sixties. Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band have been a hoi cull item, and their.new album Ice Cream For Crow • Virgin/ should please (heir hard core following It's too had commercial fame has^luded the good Captain, because his music is usually first-rate But being a wild hybrid of avant garde jazz, riiral blues — especially in Beefheart s vocals — rock and roll, and fantasy, radio stations would never know how to program Captain Beefheart. Thi^^ a solid
effort that brings out all the right qualities of Captain Beefhedrt The Grassroots were one of the most successfulbands in the '60s and '70s and it’s nice to see their main man bassist/vocalist Rob Grill is back on the road with a new version of the group What's even bet ter is the fact their new allium. Power* Of The Night (MCA), is a well put together collection of good, hard driving, melodic rock and roll Rob Grill is in fine voice and the new members of The Grassroots are top-notch musicians A few tracks slip into a typical dull stadium rock sound, but, (or the most part, The Grassroots still have what it takes to be a contending group This is a nice colheback
