Firemen Torch House
By Doris Ward OCEAN VIEW - The old house on Rt. 9 Ocean View went out in a spectacular blaze Sunday while a half doze a, fire companies from surrounding communities stood by as it burned to the ground. Spectators lined the streets to watch as firement. ingnited the blaze, then supervised its final hours. Ultimately all that remained was a brick chimney and a smouldering pile of debris. Condemned several years ago, the home, which dated back to 1760 according to owner Martin Walsh, served a final purpose when it was used for a fire-fighting drill in mutual aid cooperation by firemen from Dennisville, Sea Isle City, Strathmere, Erma, Ocean View and Avalon. The local historical society had earlier removed all items that might be of future historical value. According to Ocean View Fire Chief, George Robinson the drill work went off perfectly except for an accident when a hose coupling broke loose injuring firefighter David Whittington of Sea Isle City. Whittington was taken to Burdette Tomlin Hospital in Cape May Court House where he was treated and released.
