Longtime fans of Bob Seger have to have mixed emotions about his rise to fame. Of course they’re happy for Seger, who has worked extremely hard to get mass approval for his music, but his records lack the fiery passion his early sides ih the late ’60s had. His new album The Distance (Capitol) is another well put-together collection of songs that would never offend. Unfortunately, none of the tracks overwhelm either, making one wish Seger wouldn't play it so safe and take a few chances. Still, Seger's familiar voice pleases enough people to ensure radio play, which is still the

key to chart success. Bow Wow Wow haven’t quite become the sensation people expected, despite the fact their single "I Want Candy’’, did fairly well on the charts. Their teenage enthusiasm, coupl-
ed with primitive, tribal rhythms, can be charming in small doses, yet too often it becomes insipid and dull 12 Original Recordings (Harvest) compiles their first singles, before their limited success and these
early tracks have more energy than what they're doing now. Nice but hardly essential. RECORD PRODUCER Marty Pekar had a vision of taking artists from the '50s and allowing them enough freedom in the studio to recreate the magic they once had His series of albums are all worth your attention The two most recent. The Blue Emotions' Doo Wop All
Night Long and Johnnie & Joe's Kingdom 0/ Love find both groups in peak form. The tunes are all melodic, the voices strong, and the arrangements warm and satisfying. Strong 'SOs-styled vocals are still around, but one has to search them out Thanks to people such as Marty Pekar it's getting easier to locate such gems The third collection of novelty numbers compiled
by the noted record collector of the obscure Dr. Drmento is now out and like the ones that came, before, it’s a lot of fun DEMENTOS MEMENTOS (PVC) has 16 songs of the bizarre. From The Three Stooges' "The Alphabet Song" to Gary (Vtiriler s "My Name Is Not Merv Griffin", one is in for a truly wacky time. Can hardly wait for Dr Demento s next collection.
