Shadeland Saved
By BOB SMILES VILLAS — A request by Bayside Village Inc. to have the township vacate part of Shadeland Avenue has been withdrawn, according to developer Jack Bowman Bowman said Monday he was ■shocked" by the opposition residents raised last week when Township Committee approved on first reading on ordinance granting Bayside Village rights to the 50-by-400 feet piece of property Mayor Peggie Bieberbach was the only committee member to vote against the ordinance that was to have been considered for final adoption March 28 "I was trying to do something for the township." Bow'man said of his plans for developing what he described as an “environmentally sen silivc" area "In this case, what's good for Bayside Village is good for the township." he added. WHEN , COMPLETE. Shadeland Avenue will run from Bayshore Road to the bay The part of the street Bowman sought to have vacated has not yet been developed According to the developer, he owns five lots on each side of the 400 foot streleh of Shadeland he hoped lo vacate If the or dinance introduced last week had been adopted, he would have been able to combine the 10 lots into two 125-by-400 fool properties "I don't know which way we ll go now," he said, adding that under the township's zoning regulations there is the possibility of 10 dwelling units being built in the area LAST WEEK. Lower Township Taxpayers Association president Joseph Davis blasted the Committee for even considering giving away such a "valuable piece of property " He charged that the street is used by residents for access to the beach, and that the 75 homeowners already living there apparently were never informed a part of the street might he vacated But Bowman responded Monday by pointing out that very few people use
this area to reach the beach because most of the ground consists of dunes and is "not walkable." He added that because his plan met with such strong opposition. he never had the chance to explain fully to the Committees or public his total proposal that would include providing the township with a more suitable access to the beach
