^ews Notes from The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis
WOULD-BE lifeguards can pick up applications at North Wildwood City Hall. Beach Director Bob Hall says the tests for new guards will be held the first three weeks in June. Gene "Scoop" Taylor, back from his triumphant showing Hollywood. Fla., is getting set to whip beaches in shape- for the late May opening. Wildwood beach mascot John Navin has copped a Nabisco TV commercial series. Navin has starred on a few episoderof TVs "Facts of Life." Ex-Wildwood lifeguard Eugene Reidy. the local para sailing tycoon, will be back shortly after winding up winter chores as master of ceremonies and entertainment director at the world-famous ' Button" night club in Fort Lauderdale THE CREST'S Pat Croce, physical therapist for the Flyers, was featured on TV news with his innovative program of after game! massages for the hockey players to ease muscletkinks et al OUR CREST neighbors, the Gaudio family, now own nine huge garden & crafts centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey ONE OF WILDWOOD'S biggest boosters. Arthur Godfrey, has passed away Flying back and forth from New York to his Virginia plantation, the ol' redhead had splendid sea gull's eye views of Cape May County and thought the region was one of the most attractive in the U S A He often said so on his network TV shows as did his entertainers We recall Carmel Quinn talk mg about Diamond Beach
for about 20 minutes When the National Marbles Tournament invited Godfrey to Wildwood to crown the champions, his acceptance was in the return mail. Among other things, area solons presented Godfrey with the largest lobster they could find A poor New York kid who had served in both the Navy and Coast Guard. Godfrey became the na lion’s top commercial salesman with his folksy, low key barefoot voice. By being "on the level.” he sold oceans of soup and tea Nearly all of his enter tamers appeared in the Wildwoods fairly often These included the McGuire Sisters who step ped on stage at Diamond Beach wearing full length breath 'o sprirfg mink Carmel Quinn appeared for several weeks for Senior Citizens MARIAN MARLOWE, now retired in Sea Girt, lik ed the area so well she lingered for a week's vacation after her Wildwood engagement The Chordettes were another Godfrey act to appear here at the Manor Night club history was made the year Godfrey fired Julius LaRosa on na tional TV Local agent Ed die Suez booked LaRosa for Anglesea's Club Avalon that fateful season La Rosa returned for the en tire season at Cozy Morley's last year In a touching tribute. LaRosa credited Godfrey with giy
ing him his big break and said. "May he rest in peace ” WILDWOODS Helen McCarthy designed the St Paddy's day decor at Cape Medical Supply. Court House. A boomlet in medical supply businesses is anticipated in this area Bob McCarthy and Mike Coogan are the staff respiratory therapists Coogan holds the record as the Wildwood island lifeguard with the most seasons of service on the patrols Speaking of the Coogans. Avalon's Mary Elleh Coogan has been ac cepted by Immaculata College She'll follow in the footsteps of her famous aunt. Jeanmarie Coogan. who is now managing editor of "Nurse 83" magazine Her uncld, Joe Coogan. another wellknown author, wrote "The Rear March" while living on Crocus Road in the Crest back in the early '60 s II A L I. A II A N II I C. II alumnarie Bonnie Jean is the pretty Irish barperson whipping up "Bloody Mary" specials every Sun day afternoon at the Pirate's Den LONG-TIME Wildwood athlete Joe Cunningham, owner of Jilly Motel, is on the faculty of Kingsway Regional High School So it's only natural that he's offering special rates to high school seniors In June, seniors from Catholic and public high schools an nually jam center island for vacations to celebrate graduation It's something like the traditional collegians spring break :n Fort Lauderdale
AREA HISTORIAN James Smith tells us Court House's Bellevue Cafe was once a state police bar racks North Wildwood's Woody's Cafe was a onetime fire house A PREDICTION of a banner season for Wildwoods comes from a most unlikely source. Sam Capizzi. head of Ocean City's Motel Association, predicts the resort will lose much of its trade to the Widl woods. Capizzi believes the high prices, beach fees and erosion will all drive Ocean City regulars south to the Wildwoods He contends Wildwood have free, broad beaches, steady prices and lots more things to do than Ocean City Many business experts believe the local free beaches policy will really pay off in 1983
