County PIC Lauded By Labor Secretary

By JOE ZELNIK U S. Assistant Secretary of Labor Albert Angrisani praised Cape May County's Private Industry Council (PIC) at a luncheon at the Lodge in North Wildwood last Wednesday afternoon The federally-funded PIC is replacing the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and is an effort to train the unemployed and. underemployed for jobs in the private sector It has a $1 7-million budget Angrisani came to compliment PIC for being one of only two PICs in the country to be selected as its own “prime sponsor” this year It was previously lumped with four other counties because pf ite small population IRONICALLY, under legislation that will take ef feet in October, the county once again could be merged with other counties because new rules, aimed at reducing duplication and administrative costs, set a 200.000 minimum popula lion area for a prime sponsor The county and PIC in tend to appeal to the gover nor for permission to continue handling their own "service delivery area " Angrisani lauded the county PIC as "an example the rest of the country can be proud of " He cited its 90 percent job placement rate, compared to a na tional average of 50-70 per-

cent. "Thank you for a job well done.," he said. HE ATTACKED "those who accentuate the negative and don't thank people for a job well done. Negativism sells in our country. That has to be corrected Stress the positive things.” Angrisani was introduced by Philip A. Matalucci, county treasurer and chairman of the Republican Par ty. who called him “my personal friend for many, many years.” Angrisani spoke for 15 minutes, tracing his own political career including his chairmanship of Presi dent Reagan's campaign in New Jersey, his role on the President's transition team, and his federal appointment He said Reagan had initiated "a revolution that is beginning to work." and cited lower interest rates, lower inflation, higher pro duction. and "a real increase in wages " He conceded unemployment problems "No one had a feel for'the pain we had to go through.” he said He called that "the last frontier, closest to my heart.” and said he had been charged with "reshaping our training and employment programs ” Agrisani closed by announcing that Matalucci has been appointed to the federal Advisory Council on Unemployment In

surance which meets twice a year. Master of ceremonies at the luncheon was Freeholder Director Anthony T. Catanoso, who is in charge of PIC "We re here to get acquainted with A1 Angrisani,” he told the group. Catanoso, who is North Wildwood mayor, gave Angrisani a key to that city He also received a key to Wildwood from Assemblyman Guy F Mu ziani, who is Wildwood mayor. And PIC chairman Gregory Willis gave Angrisani a box of salt water taffy Willis listed a number of previous PIC honors in eluding a Presidential recognition for community service, an award from the state for "an outstanding logo," and a certificate of appreciation from the county chamber of commerce About 70 persons attended the luncheon. Many were elected officials and Republican political leaders. Most had been invited by telephone that morning PIC-CETA administrator Nan Mavromates thanked Angrisani for "leaving the capital and allowing us ■time in his extremely busy schedule." Agrisani reportedly drove in from Philadelphia where he spent Tuesday night, and continued on to Trenton Wednesday afternoon
