State Says N.J. Clams Safe

TRENTON - The New Jersey Division of Fish. Game and Wildlife's Bureau of Shellfisheries says that hard clams taken from (he state's waters are perfectly safe to consume This assurance was issued following news reports of persons being taken ill after eating clams which were landed at Long Island. N Y docks It is believed the tainted clams may have been illegally harvested from polluted waters. GALE CRITCHLOW. chief of the New Jersey Bureau of Shellfisheries. said there have been no reports of problems with clams taken in New Jersey The harvesting of New Jersey clams, she said, is strictly regulated, and problems with tainted clams have been greatly reduced through the use of depura tlon processes and the state's hard clam relay program. NEARLY A dozen year ago, New Jersey, in an fort to save the staters clamming industry, began transporting clams from polluted waters to clean waters where the clams were allowed to purify themselves This relay pro gram was started in Atlantic County, but has since been expanded to include

clams from both the Manasquan and Shark., rivers. These clams are taken from these rivers and transported to "cleansing lots" in Tuckerton Cove and Barnegat Bay They remain in these lots for at least 30 days and then are tested for purity before they are allowed to be harvested IN ADDITION to the hard clam relay program. New Jersey has two privately operated depuration plants for the process of soft clams. A third depuration plant for hard clams is scheduled to open this summer in Highlands Ms. Critchlow said the opening of the depuration plants, along with the opening of some 300 acres of relay lots, has greatly reduced the temptation by the state s clammers to harvest from cloned waters Also she said, the improvement in water -quatuy, especially in the southern part of the state, has allowed more areas to be reopened for clamming The state has approximately 2,500 commercial clammers, who are licensed by the stale Last year ns reported by the National Marine Fisheries Service, New Jersey clammers landed 922,400 pounds of hard clams
