Just So Pat Bieberbach Does A Good Job

Don’t Knock By JOE ZELNIK I see where the sensationalist press is making a big deal out of the fact that a fellow was working at two Pennsylvania state colleges — Millersville and Shippenburg — under two different names They even arrested the poor guy, just for being ambitious. Since when is it news if a person has to hold more than one job to make it in the present economy? Nobody in Cape May County has one job. They either have zero, or two or more How many people do you know that have a political job, a real job, and a seasonal job? The only thing different about this guy was that he took two identities, Anthony Williams and Peter Pearse. For this, the news media ran screaming headlines, another effort to sell newspapers. FORTUNATELY no one can ever accuse the Herald and Lantern of such shenanigans We don't sell our paper We just stack it any place more than three people gather at a time and watch them fight over it. Seriously, I've traveled our circulation routes and seen people standing in the rain waiting for this paper And when the bundle is dropped, they*rush over like it was free butter. Anyway, holding two jobs under two identities is fairly common in this country President Reagan, I'm sure you realize, is also Treasury Secretary Regan He needed the money He just didn't have the good sense (or his ego wouldn't permit him) to at least come up with two more different names. Locally, the fellow passing as both Assemblymen Joseph Chinnici and Guy Muziani was smart enough to do that. I SEE SOME OF YOU looking skeptical Think about it. Have you ever seen both of them together, I mean really together Sure, they might be seated at the same head table, but one is always off — to the men’s room, to the

Two Identities bar, to the car to get his briefcase. He's really changing his disguise. Same person, same speech, same voting record. Or, take one woman ambitious to be mayor. Give her a blonde wig and a brunette wig and, voila, Peggie Bieberbach and Pat Peterson, hustling back and forthU between Lower and Middle townships As long qs she’s doing a good job, who can blame Peggie Peterson or Pat Bieberbach or whatever her real name is? Besides, if Peterson had been elected Middle mayor, she was going to reveal the whole thing, going on "That's Incredible” to announce that one female was mayor of two towns. Mike Voll spoiled it ali. NOW I’M NOT POSITIVE about this one, but I'm quite sure Fred Coldren and Bob Smeltzer are one and the same. That's probably why Smeltzer left his job as director of civic affairs for Cape May City, got rid of his moustache, and went to Marine National Bank, There were too many times when Smeltzer and city manager Coldren were in the same place at the same time. Smeltzer was going nuts (and getting confused, too) whipping off his fake moustache to be Coldren It was like a Peter Sellers/Inspector Clouseau movie Since I've revealed other person's duo-identities, fairness requires that I admit I am equally quilty I’ve got one daughter in college and haven't finished paying for the other one’s yet. You think I could do that on one journalist's salary? By day, I’m Joe Zelnik; by night, Carla Linz of the Atlantic City Press Hard to believe, you say? Did you see "Tootsie?" Think about it: have you ever seen me on Carla's beat, in Ocean or Lower Township? Of course not. Have you ever seen Carla in Cape May or the Courthouse? Hardly. The only question that leaves is whether the real person is me, or Carla.

Our Readers Write Citizens Originated Crest Charter Study To The Editor: A recent article in the "news digest" column of your paper i March 16) makes mention of the Wildwood Crest Borough Commissioners having beaten the two Citizens Groups in Wildwood Crest to the punch by putting a charter study question on the November ballot in Wildwood Crest I would like to clarify this In truth, the commissioners were asked by members of the Concerned Citizens to consider pricing a charter study question on the ballot This question was asked at several town meetings, and the reply was always the same The commissioners insisted that there was no reason for a question‘of this type Accordingly, the Concerned Citizens of Wildwood Crest prepared a set of petitions that we were ready to circulate When the commissioners were informed of this, they decided to allow the question to be placed on the ballot, but I feel that it should lx* clearly noted that no one was "beaten to the punch " As always, the issue had to be forced on the commissioners The Charter Study question was not placed on the ballot because of an original thought on the part of the commissioners, rather, it was placed there at the insistence of members of this community because we care about our town ED MC GOWAN Wildwood Crest

Tax Social Security Income?

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Last week, the Herald and Lantern published a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal from Ralph W Ells of Boca Raton. Fla., in which he identified himself as one of the "affluent elderly" and questioned why he should be receiving more Social Security than he needed The following letters were written to the Journal in respoasc > Let me add a loud "Hear 1 Hear!" to the comments of Ralph Ells. I winter here in Florida, surrounded by others like me, who lie in the sun, swim, walk or play tennis, boat, read, and then, wearied by the day's exertions, take cocktails and dinner vyith friends Our social security checks come in regularly Both my wife and I had been continously employed for over 30 years In the course of those years our advancement in our respective jobs, and, yes, our careful management of income, and further, the miracles of medical science combined to bring us to a "comfortable" old age But, with Mr Ells, we have long wondered why we should not be taxed on our SS income Why should not every one of us whose income is above a certain level make some required contribution not only to the truly impoverished, young or old, but also to the too-heavily taxed young and middle aged workers today’’ II seems only fair — even a kind of required "noblesse oblige"! MAX S PERLMAN Key Biscayne, Fla In his Feb. 23 letter, Ralph W Ells bemoans the fact that the affluent are being paid unneeded money by the Social Security If’hc didn't need the money, why did he make application to Social Security for payment'’ He rriay not need the money, but for those of as who have paid into the fund since its inception, or almost that long, financial plaas have included that payment. We haven't all been fortunate enough to have had incomes at his level Perhaps if all of the other demands had not been made against Social Security — other than "social security for the elderly" - it wouldn't be in the present moss Greedy politicians have never been able to keep their fingers out of any pie to make themselves look good in the eyes of their constituents, regardless of how unethical it might be

Sign your checks back to Uncle Sam, Mr. Ells, perhaps that will ease your conscience. MRS. ANTON J TESAREK Elmhurst, III. Mr Ells notes that cost-of-living indexing Increased his benefits $5,014 from 1975 to 1982. His original benefit payment of $4,322 was paid in 1971 dollars. The increases came in inflated dollars. While his payments doubled, the typical purchases of food, fuels, medications, medical care, etc. quadrupled. His concern at receiving more than he paid in is surprising. If he allowed any other organization to use his money since 1940 he would receive considerably more than his contributions Further, Mr. Ells notes that it takes seven workers to support his receipt of $180 each week. Actually, it lakes 3.5 workers plus matching corporate contributions. The current proposal is fair It will allow the affluent elderly to be taxed and a portion of their income redistributed among these whose family responsibilities did not allow for the requisite savings essential to a com fortable retirement CHARLES KAHN Brentwood, N Y Mr Ells wrote that from Jan. 1, 1940 to Mar l, 1971, at which time I assume he retired, ho paid a total SS Tax of $2,654. He should be aware of the steep increases of recent years I, practicing as an incorporated dentist for the last four years, have paid SS Taxes totaling $14,274.58 in that time I won't feel at all bad in accepting my SS checks.
