Ocean City News Tribute to Princess

OCEAN CITY - Secretary of the Navy John Lehman will be President Reagan's representative here 2 p.m Sunday, when the city honors the late Princess Grace of Monaco and the Kelly family, in the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terr. The Kellys have been long-time summer residents of Ocean City and Princess Grace spent many vacations here. John B Kelly Sr. was one of the guiding lights of the city's beach patrol and helped build it into a group that has won more championships than any other squad on the Jersey shore. Secretary Lehman, a cousin of the Kellys, also spent many summers here vacationing at the Kelly's beach front home. HIGHLIGHT OF the afternoon will be the presentation of a large hand-crafted plaque to be ’ permanently housed in the

city's Historical Museum, 409 Wesley Ave. The plaque has been constructued by T. John Carey, a local businessman and driving force behind the upcoming celebrations. ^ A national lifeguard surfing champion in the 1930s, Carey hopes that past and present members of the city’s beach patrol will attend the Sunday ceremony. Many members of the Kelly family are expected, including John B. Kelly Jr. of Philadelphia, an international rowing champion like his father. Several of Princess Grace's children, including Prince Albert, are expected. PRINCESS GRACE was seen often in Ocean City over the years at thefbeach and shopping. A list of this resort’s 1963 special events, which range from the unique “Night In Venice" boat parade and bay celebration to madcap hermit crab races is now available. For a free copy write to the Public Relations Department, City Hall, Ocean City, 06226 Vacationers can save $2 on seasonal tags by ordering beach tags by mail from this resort April 1-May 31. The pre-season rate for individual seasonal tags is $3.50 with an increase to $5.50 beginning June 1. Orders should include name of persons who want the tags with a check in the amount of $3.50 for each tag. Checks should be made payable to the City of Ocean City and sent to Beach Fee Office, City Hall, Ocean City A stamped, self-addressed envelope should be included with the order. A RECEIPT will be returned to the payee with information about where the tags may be picked up upon arrival in Ocean City Beach tags will be on sale at Ocean City Information Centers and other locations beginning Friday. May 6. Tags must be worn by all persons 12 years or older June 18 through Labor Day. September 5lh, 9:30 a m.-5:30 p.m. Want to become a beachcomber? Ocean City will make anyone an official beachcomber who drops off 10 ore more sea shells at the Public Relations Office in City Hall The shells are tagged with a colorful decal and used as give-aways at City Information Centers Thousands of persons who visit this resort from the Country’s heartland have never had the opportunity to gather shells and welcome them as gifts.

THE SHELLS should he large enough to accommodate a two-inch decal and be cleaned before delivery. No smelly shells will be accepted. The city’s beachcomber certificate entitles the bearer to all rights and privileges normally accorded city beachcombers, which are zero, zip, zilch. However, the certificates do make nice souvenirs and are suitable for framing, laminating or sticking in between the pages of a large book.
