Revivified ‘Playhouse' Auditions

CAFE MAV - In years past, the Cape May Playhouse whs the

theatrical showplacc of all South Jersey. To its stage came established and ris-

ing stars to provide dramatic entertainment for visitors and residents And more than a few local shore residents made their acting debutes on that stage with those stars. That grand old theatre has been gone for two decades Now, a new troupe has claimed the name, and profniscs to restore the prestige of the old playhouse Managing director Allen Berks says. “The New Cape May Playhouse will be a local company making the best possible use of the best talent in our area. Except for guest artists, we shall attempt to fill all cast and crew positions with local actors and technicians before looking for outside professional help.” BERKS HAS over 30 years of stage experience. A partial list of his production credits include the national tours of Joan Rlondell in Dark At The Top Of The Stairs, Art Carney in The Rope Dancers. Pal Joey. Dial M for Murder, and The Diary Of Anne Frank. His set designs have gained national acclaim. Cape May Playhouse has no building to house its company It intends to tour its first production The

troupe will play weekend engagements throughout the summer season at theatres and halls in many New Jersey shore resorts and into the Poconos of Pennsylvania. "We hope." says Berks. “To play at least two weekends at home in Cape

A rsenic and Old Lace has been selected as the new company’s first production. Auditions will be held. 6:30-11 p m . Sunday. April 10. at the Wicker Room of the Golden Eagle Inn. The play has a cast of 15 and requires a crew of six. All interested persons are urged to attend regardless of experience. Future plans for the playhouse include the acquisition of a site agreeable to the planning commission; for the- remodling into or \ construction of a 250-seat theatre, work rooms,--and 6 refreshment lounge, all reflecting the historic attitude of Cape May. "The building of our home theatre is still a dream;" says Berks, "A dream we expect to come

true."

COURT HOUSE - Businessman Ed Rosenberg has announced that he will oppose Middle Township resident James Alexis in the local Democratic Primary for township committee "Backroom politics will not determine who represents the Democrats of Middle Township The voters will ‘Although Alexis. Ed is partowner of Rosenberg Distributors, a bread distributorship covering all of Cape May County. Rosenberg is an active local and county Democrat who opposed Angela Pulvino in last year’s County Clerk race. He has recently been appointed as the first County Democratic Organization's finance chairman.
