the Dutch connection
So why. you might ask, have a tulip festival in a National Landmark City known for it s Victorian heritage’’ The idea originated with Harry Lozour, the grand old man of the (Chamber of Commerce and the Dellas Agency It has to do with the man who gave his name to the Cape while exploring it extensively on a voyage Jor the Dutch West India Co in 1621 - Capl Cornelius Jacobsen Hey Antoher Dutch explorer. Sir Henry Hudson, is actually given credit for discovering the Cape in IGOy during an ex ploration of the Delaware Bay But Capl Mey boasted so of the Cape when hi 1 returned to the Netherlands that in 1628 he was installed as the first Director (ieneral of the New Netherlands the name given to all coastal lands ly •mg between Cape Cod. Mass . and Cape Henlopcn. Del Other than Cornelius Mey's name, the Dutch influence today is mostly nominal. The dazzling display of color in the tulip festival serves as a fitting reminder of 35(1 years agoand the Cape’s namesake A Capl < ornelms Jacobsen Mey And as for Harry l/ozour. he can Ik* often Ik* seen on the Cape May Mall personally watering those planters full of beautiful tulip bulbs'
