Suspended Nanavati Vows to Return
COURT HOUSE - Hit Friday with termination of his staff privileges at Burdett Tomlin Memorial Hospital, cardiologist Dr Suketu Nanavati this week vowed to “to practice here the rest of my life, with or without this hospital... "This is the United States, not Russia or Poland,’’ said Dr. Nanavati, 38. a native of India. The hospital announced Friday that it was terminating Dr. Nanavati’s admitting and consulting privileges effective May 20 and his right to treat patients admitted prior to that date will be ended on July 1, It said he “consistently fails to abide by the bylaws, regulations.
policies and procedures of the institution." Dr. Nanavati’s attorney, James A. Peruto of Philadelphia, said Monday he will seek an injunction in state or federal court, "or both," to force the hospital to reinstate the .doctor "pending the out-come of his case." DR. NANAVATI is suing "individuals and members of the medical and administrative staff with discriminatory conduct," Peruto said. Dr. Nanavati’s case was filed in Atlantic county court, Peruto said, "because local judges had conflicts of interest." That resulted in an injunction last November forbidding the hospital to dismiss Dr. Nanavati. Peruto said.
“but this is a new set of
issues."
Loss of privileges at the county's only hospital presumably would be a critrcal blow to Dr Nanavati’s practice, which he said included 1.300 patients in the last four years, "more than 1.000 of them in the hospital "If I have to. 1 will build my own hospital.” he told the Herald and lantern
Monday.
A ••COMMUNITY message” released to the press Friday by Alan I Gduld, president of the hospital's board of governors. charged Dr Nanavati "does not havd the ability to work with others." It said his behavior violated two hospital constitution requirements: "thereputa-
tion of being an ethical and conscientious practitioner" and "a temperament and disposition that will enable him to work in harmony with its colleages on the Medical Staff " And it said he violated a hospital constitution re quirement that one must " accept criticism without resentment and offer it in a spirit and manner that is constructive and devoid of offense and malice..." It said "the hospital also has the responsibility to in sist upon observance of the guidelines of organization and procedure which are essential for the orderly and efficient provision of patient care," • TM NOT AFRAID," said Dr Nanavati can
get affiliation with any hospital or university It's the principle If there is a problem in medical practice. does the doctor have a moral responsibility to in form the hospital and the people, or follow the rest of the medical staff in a con spiracy of silence 9 The people know that is going on in that hospital." he added "The board behaved in a selfish manner It totally ignored the wishes of the people of this county We will see whether the people of this county or 50 vested interests will win." The hospital's statement said it has three cardiologists and a fourth who "anticipates certification in the fall" will locate here July 1.
