Sloan Says Opponent Is Linked to Realtors
AVALON — After touring the areas of Avalon most plagued by noise last summer, mayoral candidate Rachel H. Sloan called her opponent in the race, Ernest L. Yarborough, a "candidate for private business interests, not the residents.” Sloan visited areas which frequently turned up on the police blotter and talked to area residents, her news release said. Particular attention was given to 22nd Street through 28th Street, and to the 400, 500, and 600 block of 21st Street, she said. “After speaking with the people who have been experiencing the problems,
it’s clear that we must pursue the irresponsible property owner who permits these conditions to continue, as well as the rowdy persons themselves," said Councilwoman Sloan. "In this election, we can’t let a person take office who will not attack this problem, and worse, may give government influence to a small group of private businessmen, a handful of realtors," Sloan said. "1 DON’T SAY this idly, but only because I am deeply concerned based upon what I have seen my opponent already do and say," Sloan said. "First, his campaign staff, from his treasurer to
his backers, are realtors. Certainly not all the realtors in town, but an active group of them." "Secondly, it’s this same group of realtors who were warned by letter last January that the disorderly property owners were going to be prosecuted if they permitted these problems to continue. Now, a candidate has been produced who has stated as a very plank of his platform, that we must "stress coopera tion, not confrontation." "Thirdly, he talks of appointing a Mayor's Advisory Committee. This is the most disturbing plan of all. This nameless, nonelected group is to be brought into the government and given a position of influence, and who knows what control," Sloan said. "I call upon the voters of Avalon to reject his ideas at the polls on May 10. The voters know my record of government service and dedication. What do we really know of his # ideas)" asked Sloan Bulk Trash Reminder AVALON - Avalon Borough Administrator Andrew Bednarek again urges Avalon residents to please take advantage of the bulk trash pick-up on the dates designated.
