Odd Behavior, But Consider

By GARY RUDY I don’t believe that there are many people in this area who would consider that a weekend of rest and * relaxation would start with digging in your garden — looking fo? fishing worms. However, if you knew that in prime Pennsylvania trout country, worms cost about $1 a dozen and you could get about $20 worth by digging in your garden, the task worthwhile. Ive's just returned from a few days of trout fishing and spring gobbler hunting in Pennsylvania, a trip that I look forward to every May just like a child looks forward to Christmas in December. The hunting of spring gobbler is something that most New Jersey hunters have yet to experience, but, according to reports, they will soon have the oppor

CAPE MAY - In American League softball action the Rusty Nail went undefeated iri three games First it beat Midas Muf flers 7-2 May 3 behind Will Mendo and Buddy Cheriacco, who collected three hits apiece. May 5 the Nail bludgeoned K & E Contractors 15-2. Will Mendo again led his team with four hits as Dave Weinberg and Harry Tilotson knocked in three runs apiece. Monday, May 9, the Nail downed Dekelco 10-3 behind an awesome offen sive display by Kandy Scott, who collected three RBI's on two hits, one of which was a home run On May 3, K & E Contractors downed Mayer's Bar in the initial game for both teams Group Cape May downed USCG EECEN in a clash between Coast Guard teams 7 to 2. May 4. Dekelco barely beat Mayers in an extrainning game 11-9. Also on Wednesday the 4tri, Group Cape May remained undefeated (2-0) by downing the, Wildwood Carpenters 8 to 5.

tunity right here in South Jersey, In Pennsylvania, you can enter the woods anytime in the morning, but you can only hunt until 11 am and must be out of the woods by noon. The reason for this is that hen turkeys are nesting at this time of the year and after their early morning feeding and mating, they go back to their nests around 11. THE SAME PEOPLE who wouldn't believe that digging worms was fun, sure wouldn't think that getting up at 3 a m., taking half an hour to put on camouflage makeup so well that you don't have a bit of skin showing and going out in a strange woods on a strange mountain at 4 a.m. was any fun either. I do admit that the alarm is annoying, especially after you have been lying

ON THURSDAY. May 5, Doc’s remained unbeaten (2-0) by defeating McDonalds 11-6 The Press also remained amongst the ranks of the undefeated as they downed the USCG EECEN team 11-6. Steve Luteri collected four hits and Bob Foltz had three hits for the victors Kindle Ford destroyed TMU 30-5 in an error-filled contest On Friday, May 6, K & E Contractors demolished winless Midas Mufflers 16 to 2 in a hitting clinic Wildwood Carpenters not ched their first win of the season by downing the Press 14-2. On Mayday, May 9. the USCG Mariners shut out TMU 28-0. Tim Elmore and John Stahl provided the firepower with a home run apiece. On Tuesday. May 10. Group Cape May down ed McDonals 15-4. On Wednesday, May 11. the USCG Mariners also defeated McDonals behind the timely hitting of Sal Desimone and John Stahl, who had three RBI's apiece.

awake until 2 a m. with the anticipation of the morning hunt I also cheat a little by using a flashlight to walk back on the mountain A person who has come prepared for spring gob bier will be in the woods long before sun-up with a bag full of turkey calls and assorted devices, one of which will be a call that resembles that of an owl. FOR SOME STRANGE reason, turkeys in the spr ing will awaken at the call of an owl and will shake the whole mountain in the dark with a very loud gobble. If you are lucky enough to have a turkey answer your calls, the next thing to do it to remain completely motionless and continue to try to entice the male turkey (the gobbler) to within shooting range The Game and Fish Cbm mission must have worked long and hard to combine a season like this because, now that they have chased me out of the woods at eleven o’clock, it gives me just enough time to grab a quick lunch and st^rt using $20 worth of worms on some of the best trout streams in the east SOME OF THE older men in camp, who have long since given up the early morning hunt, get just as much pleasure jn sleeping a little later and having a nice hot lunch ready for us when we return. There were eight men in camp this year and bet ween the stories of who saw what this morning and who did what in the old days, it's past one before we get out to the trout streams. A real trout fisherman is far worse than a real turkey hunter because he carries twice as much gear and hundreds of dollars^in flies and lures and will never admit to using garden worms to catch a trout. 1 love fly fishing, and am fairly proficient at casting a small No 22 mas quito into a trout stream However, after hours of casting that fly without success, the old standby garden worm will get 'em every time We had a few beautiful days this year, and will

have more than one meal of pan-fried rainbows I KNOW there are still lots of people who consider digging of worms and going into the woods at dark and walking in ice cold trout water just a little odd, but consider the rewards When was the last time you saw the sun come up on a beautiful spring morning — especially deep in the woods, where the birds started singing before first light and the nearest town is 25 miles away? When was the last time you saw the world come alive without cars and trucks and noises of all sorts 9 When was the last time you sal down at a dinner table with eight men and had the oldest (72> give the blessing and thartk God for letting him be there with his sons and brothers for another year 9 I'm willing to bet its been a long time since you went through, day without hear ing a phone ring or reading a newspaper It’s going to be a long Sports Day Set May 24 COURT HOUSE - Sports Day '87. a playday for all eighth grade students who will be enter ing Middle Township High School in September, will be held 9:30 a m l 45 p m Tuesday.
