Mow Down Batters Chadwick, Velardo

Good pitching beats good hitting, so the old saying goes. Once again it has been proven as pitching highlighted area baseball last week. Strikeouts and close games were in order with Lower Cape May's Bob Chadwick leading the way. The Caper pitcher recorded 10 K's as lower edged Wildwood, 7 to 6. Another double figure strikeout performance was turned in by Wildwood Catholic lefthander Joe Velardo who mowed down 10 as Catholic downed Beuna. At Cape May Court House, Rich Rhinesmith of Middle Township and Wildwood Catholic's Joe Aita hooked up in a duel with the Crusaders coming out on top, 4-2. Joe Piro and Velardo contributed runscoring singles for the winners. In other action, Tom Girhorski tossed a twohitter as Middle shut out St. Augustine. In league standings, St. Joseph continues to lead the Cape Atlantic II race with Middle Township holding down the third position. (KEAN CITY continues to rely on the arm of Sondra Reeves as the Red Raiders do away with each and every opponent in girls softball action. Middle Township, behind Betsy King's three-hitter, clubbed Wildwood Catholic, 16-1. Caron Forbes and Sue Stcenland drove in big runs for the winners. Speaking of winners, there must be losers too. Lower Cape Mafy. Wildwood, and Wildwood Catholic continue to have trouble winning this Spr ing. The three local teams have just a handful of victories between them with Wildwood still working on its first win as of May 13th. THE POWERFUL Ocean City squad continues to dominate league track meets. Last week Johnathan Dice 'captured three events in leading the Raiders to a 127-4 win over a hapless JWiddle Township team. Wiidwood ran up against a tough Hammonton team, losing 96-36 last week. Hammonton had three double winners in coasting to victory. The Ocean City girls tracksters put away Middle Township, 87 to 35, despite Dorothy Watkins winning two events for the Panthers Scott Swain, Dave Zimmerman and Kevin Connors all turned in easy straight set wins as Lower Cape May blanked Wildwood Catholic 5-love in Cape Atlantic tennis action. Elsewhere on the courts, Ocean City rolled along with big wins over Wildwood and Sacred Heart. GOLFERS Bill Clement and Paul Lundholm led the way in Lower Cape May's 12th win of the year The Capers downed Beuna. 177-191. Middle Township lost a close match to a

strong Hammonton team. In losing by just one stroke, Tom Sponaugle turned in a fine round for Middle. Youngsters, don't forget to register for this year’s Wildwood Area Basketball Clinic. With the top assistants and guests scheduled to appear, Greg Tracey has a fine learning experience set. I feel with the knowledge and experience that will be walking around the courts June 20-24, you can’t miss. • • • BEST OF LUCK to bowler Ray Mooney Jr. as the local standout makes his move to the professional ranks. The North Cape May resident carries averages between 215 and

231 in six leagues and certainly is good enough to earn a P.B.A. card. Ray, I expect to see you on television very soon. Gayle Daniel and Marge Tator came up winners in an Avalon Women’s Golf Association tournament. Finishing second were Mary Dougherty and Grace Hathaway. MARKERS: Time for' some fun. My choice for most valuable player honors. N.B.A.: Moses Malone; N.H.L.: Wayne Gretzky Any surprises? Rookie of the year laurels in, the N B A. will go to Terry Cummings. I just hope the

DePaul product can overcome his heart troubles and continue his career. American. League baseball winners (I know it's early) will be Baltimore in the F2ast and California in tfte West. Trivia time: JVhowasthe first major league player to bat in Canada? Lou Brock, leading off for St. Louis vs Montreal, April 14, 1969 • • • In an attempt to cover local sports better, the past few weeks I have attended as many local games as I could. Some of the action good, some bad, but one thing that I have found in most games is the lack of sportsmanship. Who can blame the kids? Just watch the tube each

weekend Now. let's sec, there's John "Super Brat" McEnroe,’ Tree "The Biter" Rollins, Dave "Let me at 'em" Winfield. Billy "Here's dirt in your eye" Martin and the entire Na tional Hockey League The^fc are the so-called super Stars that young athletes learn their playing manners from Anything goes wrong, complain or fight Parents and coaches must step forward and help stop this growing problem Kids must realize Uiat bad sportsmanship only makes the player look like a fool. John McEnroe: a great example of a million-dollar idiot Remember, winning is a good thing, but not the ONLY thing
