Boys State Reps Briefed by County

COURT HOUSE - A delegation of students representing all of the County high schools was given an indocrination into the workings of county government recently in preparation for their visit to the American Legion Boys State at Rider College June 19-25. The students will be sponsored on the Boys State trip by the County American Legion Posts and the County American Legion Executive Committee. Boys State, in its 38th year, is designed to assist in developing good citizens by inspiring youth in New Jersey to take a more active and more intelligent interest in the operation of the state and the nation The week-long program at Rider College also stresses the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship. BOYS STATE Chairman Paul Martin of Ocean City said many of today 's public officials, legislators in Trenton and members of the U S. Senate and Congress attended Boys and Girl’s State during their high school days. A Girls' State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary units. Freeholder James Kilpatrick, of Ocean City, keynoted the morning talk to the students at a morning meeting at the County Vocational Technical School auditorium Kilpatrick traced the history of county government in New Jersey and ex plained the role that county government plays in the lives of the citizens. Steven McElhenny and John Etkerson, both students at Ocean City High School, and Dave Craig, from Lower Cape May Regional High School, who were delegates to the 1982 Boys' State, outlined what the 1983 delegates could expect during their week-long stay at Rider College in June FOLLOWING THE mor ning session, the Boys' State delegates were hosted at a luncheon in the Vo-Tech cafeteria by the Board of Freeholders They toured the Vo-Tech facility, the County Correctional Center and the main county building to see county government in action. Attending were Dennis Jones, Macom Roberts, Robert Staub and Lynn Baker, delegates and Max Grimes, alternate, from Ocean City High School, representing Legion Post 137, Ocean City. Post 137 representatives were Mar tin and L. Dilts, of Ocean City. Representing Post 193 at Cape May were Kevin Connor and John Porter, students at Lower Cape
