Unfortunately, because of her quitting skill, Doan was cut out of the quilt inheritance in Grandma's will. The old lady’s explanation was simply, "Dorothy

can make her own quilts."

And Dorothy has been doing just that for the last 44 years. “I do it for love,” she explained. “I

wouldn’t do it for money.”

BRUCE BIEBER, who will be giving a demonstration of decoy carving at the Quilt and Decoy Show, began collecting them in his teens after he found several abandoned decoys while hunting. His interest grew when he discovered that certain types of the birds were rather valuable. At the same time, he began carving his own decoys. As a former carpenter, his new hobby was already a familiar one. began to carve his own designs, primarily shore birds and black ducks, although he does make over 10 other kinds of ducks and birds. Bierber makes his decoys out of Jersey white cedar, a light wood, which he says is easy to carve. He knocks out a dozen at a time, a process that may take two to three days. The carving procedure starts with cutting out the initial block with a band saw. Then the carving begins. After sanding the body, Bieber attaches a separate piece of wood for the bill of the duck, then finishes with more sanding, and painting.
