■ Jersey Cape NATURALLY As temperatures begin to rise, life awakens in the salt marsh. Green shoots of cordgrass break through the mud’s surface. Fiddler crabs emerge from their burrows and begin to sort clawfuls of mud for bits of detritus. Mud snails glide over the flats, scraping algae and detritus. Grass shrimp swim from the channel depths to forage among the marsh grasses at high tide. Killifishes also become active again in the tidal creeks. Sand shrimp, rock crabs, and the coldwater fishes migrate back to the cooler ocean waters where temperature changes occur more gradually. Other species replace these migrants. Spider crabs and blue crabs reveal themselves as water terhperatures rise. Male blue crabs, which have spent the winter in the muds of shallow creeks, move downstream to join the females which have hibernated in, or closer to, ocean sediments. Large schools of baitfishes enter the embayment including silversides, anchovies, menhaden (bunker), and herrings. Their predators, wcakfish, summer flounder (fluke) and striped bass, soon follow. Also appearing in the bays are spots, kingfish, sea robins, sea horses, pipefish, black sea bass, hlowfish, sand sharks, and many more. A change in the bird populations also occurs in the spring. Ducks and geese migrate north while herons, shorebirds, and osprey fly in from soufhem wintering grounds. Many brids stop over for rest and food before journeying farther north while others will spend much of the spring, summer, and fall in Cape May County marshes. In spring, movement into and out of the marshes and bays results in an increase in the variety of plants and animals present. But spring is also the time of greatest reproduc live activity.

The horseshoe crab, actually more closely related to a spider than to a true crab, undergoes a curious mating ritual each spring. Usually during a full moon in May, horseshoe crabs move in pairs onto sandy beaches at high tide. The female digs a shallow nest, deposits several dozen eggs, and the male, which is clasped to the female's shell, fertilizes them. It is not unusual to see hundreds of horseshoe crabs stranded on the Delaware Bay beaches in the spring while countless shorebirds and laughing gulls feed on the small pea-green eggs which have been uncovered by the tides. Several species of birds also mate in spring. Herons begin to display their nuptial plumes Laughing gulls, black-capped in breeding plumage, build nests on the salt marsh and are incubating their eggs by early summer. Willets flash their black and white wing patterns to attract mates or to lure suspected A predators away from their nests. Osprey construct nests on dead cedar trees and wooden platforms which overlook the marsh. Female osprey can be seen sitting on their nests while their mates dive for fish in nearby creeks. ^jwr^^^(al^farst^h™)ugMh^>easoru^^>MVend>^BearcMVetlandWfistitut^^^
